Did Bass Pro/Cabela's halt online ammo sales? [UPDATED 2/2/2021]

For months now, I’ve been checking Bass Pro’s website a few times a day for handgun ammo. They were one of the last sites selling it for non-hyperinflated prices. I’ve noticed the past 2 or 3 weeks, there’s nothing available, not even rare/unusual calibers. I did some googling and found a couple of pages from January that said Bass Pro has halted online ammo sales, but they didn’t say why other than speculation.

Anyone else heard this? I can’t really blame them. I don’t think they had the best website design to begin with, and I’m sure we ammo seekers were causing their IT folks nightmares, but I’m just curious as to if they made a conscious decision to stop selling it online; and if so, what was the specific reason?

My only complaint would be that if true, why wouldn’t it say this on the website rather than letting us waste time searching the site?

[EDIT - Chatted with online support 2/2/2021. They weren't a lot of help and gave me this statement from 'management.'

Many types of Ammunition are in high-demand, and we are not able to accept online orders for some products, as inventory availability changes faster than any real-time inventory system can keep up with. If possible, please check your closest store for availability of this ammunition.

I suggested they put that statement on the ammo page(s) so people like me wouldn't waste their time searching. The response was thanks for the suggestion.]

It would depend on their distribution channel. If it goes to a warehouse(s) and is then shipped to each individual store, it could be cheaper for them to ship to customers from the single location rather than shipping to each store. If it's shipped straight from the distributors to the store, then it makes more sense to favor in-store sales. Probably a combination of both.

Guess it also depends on what type of customers they want. Do they prefer people coming in to the stores and seeing all the other merchandise? Not selling online would definitely reward the in-store customers. Of course, they don't have that many locations, so there might be some value to lots of online customers. I have a BassPro about 30 miles from me, but I rarely go there because it's a chore to get through the traffic.

I drop by local Cabelas every week or so. Have occasionally stumbled on them rolling out pallet loads of ammo to the floor. Even with limits, they are gone quickly. The times I've seen it, the prices have been pandemic-reasonable. I've not seen much foot traffic in the times I've been there. The ammo shelves are almost completely bare. Not as bad for display guns, but not full either.

They'd love to have people in the stores. But they have to make money somehow and online seems more doable during pandemic and pretty efficient in any case if you an recoup shipping costs or balance by not having to ship as much to stores (last I saw they ship free if over $50).

I wonder about the free S&H at $50 as well. I have no idea how much markup there was on ammo at the prices they were charging. When they did have ammo available online, S&H was reasonable. A few times all I could get that was available was under $50, and S&H was only $5.

Midway started upping their prices a couple of months ago, and I noticed in the last couple of weeks that Brownells is now selling closer to the ammoseek/gunbroker prices. Really hated to see that; however, I don't blame them. I am curious, though, if their cost has risen that dramatically, or are they just increasing their margin to put up with the hassle and workload on their employees and website.

Because people that have to go to work can't stand in line for hours on "Ammo Day" morning.
We have a local shop that allows on line purchases to be picked up at the store.
You place your order, get notified that your order is ready and then go pick it up.

That is the best way to ensure "order" at your store and it gets ammo into the hands of your ENTIRE customer base.
I would hope/expect more retailers to start doing this.

I think they are just out of ammo. They had a few times ammo for sale that had a limit of one or two, and "only in-store sale."

Same here. I was able to grab quite a bit (by my standards) in 2020, but it is hard to get anything from them now, and I can’t yet stomach $.55 /rd for 9mm ball. Only buying .22lr now, when possible.

I was just in the Albuquerque Cabela's this morning and they actually had some ammo. It wasn't out on the shelf and was sitting on a rack behind the optics counter. Gal said it had just came off the truck. I was able to get Fiocchi 9mm, Federal 10mm and CCI 22lr Mini-Mags. They also had some SD 147 gr 9mm and CCI 22lr subsonic there.
