Diagnose this Gen 5 17 FTF problem

I purchased an early production Gen 5 17 last September, 2017. At the time it was my 14th Glock. In four competition matches it has had FTF three times. My only Glock to have done this. A trip to Glock Smyrna in October 2017 the tech said Gen 5's were made to tighter tolerances and to always use the sling shot method when loading from a fresh magazine. This was before my match failures, this Glock just didn't feel right.

Last week I purchased a Gen 5 19. It's been 100% reliable. Time to do some carefully monitored parts swapping to try to diagnose the issue.

The test. Slide locked to the rear. Magazine floor plate resting on a couch cushion. Held firmly with my strong hand (right). Use the slingshot method to load a 115 gr Federal Champion or 124 gr NATO WWB round.

About once a magazine I would get a FTF as pictured below.

The following parts have been swapped with the flawless Gen 5 19 purchased last week without correcting the FTF issue.

All slide internal parts excluding the channel liner

The locking block

The magazine. Gen 3, 4, and 5 versions tested

The extractor slot has been thoroughly cleaned. I did remove the smallest of burs from the stricker slot of the slide face.

I probably would never carry this 17 for protection, BUT it may be fun to compete with for training. You just never know when you might have to do a clearing drill.

Barry, it might be worth trying that Gen5 G17 barrel in the Gen5 G19, just to see if the issue migrates to the G19. That takes advantage of the Gen5 adoption of the G19 barrel lockup for all models.

MajorD,

I used my wife's glass nail file around the firing pin hole. I think we may have fixed the FTF issue.

3 mags, 51 rounds, dropping the slide with zero issues. The last 2 mags I only used the SSL with a sloppy hold. We have an Action Pistol match followed by a 3-Gun match Oct 20-21. I think I'm going to run my Gen 5 17.

We all know failures most likely will happen while under the clock.

I have a G19X with some sorta-similar issues. I've run several brands of FMJ through it without any FTF or FTE. But I have some dummy rounds that I use for training and it fails to feed exactly like what you are showing above. These same dummy rounds run fine through my Gen 4s.

I'm not overly concerned with it since it seems to run great on real ammunition and I don't reload, but it is a slight irritation that I can't run those training drills with my 19X.

FTF during charging, or during firing? Any aftermarket parts in the slide? Near new recoil assembly?

My observations based on what you posted:

1) You say you sent it to Glock before the FTF issues? Why?
You need to send it back with the same description that you posted here so they can target specifically.

2) Shooting it for real, and slingshot-ing are not equivalent actions. Especially if resting the mag on something like the couch cushion when doing it. slingshot in the air, at the range, not at home.

3) Make certain it is not your thumb(s) interfering the slide during "exciting, stressful, match action" recoil.

4) How many rounds has this gun seen? Do you clean it constantly? Pieces do have to wear together to fit better, no matter what others say-- "breaking in" involves metal pieces self mating by rubbing againt each other. Specifically if it has higher tolerances.

FTF while charging and firing, but very rarely. Just enough to cause issues in a 100 round match.

No aftermarket parts.

Hey, I live in Cobb County, GA, just 24 miles from the mother ship. We don't ship, we drive. Glock has great walk in service. I've been there maybe 9 times in 38 years. Majority for Glock Night Sights.

Went to Glock in October 2017 because (for better or for worse) I've always used the Slide Stop Lever to drop the slide on my Glocks. This Gen 5 17 has always had the FTF issue when doing that (well until the file fix from MajorD)

She has about 500 rounds through her.

What is your carry ammunition?
My carry ammo is typically Hornady Critical Duty. I haven’t tried that ammunition in the 19X though. I bought the 19X for competition primarily. If I decide to use it for HD/carry, I’ll try plenty of the carry ammo beforehand.

I have run Winchester and Federal FMJ through it with no problems. Should be near 1,000 rounds without a single FTE or FTF except for the aforementioned dummy rounds.
