I purchased an early production Gen 5 17 last September, 2017. At the time it was my 14th Glock. In four competition matches it has had FTF three times. My only Glock to have done this. A trip to Glock Smyrna in October 2017 the tech said Gen 5's were made to tighter tolerances and to always use the sling shot method when loading from a fresh magazine. This was before my match failures, this Glock just didn't feel right.
Last week I purchased a Gen 5 19. It's been 100% reliable. Time to do some carefully monitored parts swapping to try to diagnose the issue.
The test. Slide locked to the rear. Magazine floor plate resting on a couch cushion. Held firmly with my strong hand (right). Use the slingshot method to load a 115 gr Federal Champion or 124 gr NATO WWB round.
About once a magazine I would get a FTF as pictured below.
The following parts have been swapped with the flawless Gen 5 19 purchased last week without correcting the FTF issue.
All slide internal parts excluding the channel liner
The locking block
The magazine. Gen 3, 4, and 5 versions tested
The extractor slot has been thoroughly cleaned. I did remove the smallest of burs from the stricker slot of the slide face.
I probably would never carry this 17 for protection, BUT it may be fun to compete with for training. You just never know when you might have to do a clearing drill.
