Converting G29 to 40s&w?

Hello, sorry if this has been asked before, but I have a couple burning questions.

Looking into the Glock 29, along with some other options, but the 29 is winning out. The only thing that gets me is the cost and availability of ammo meaning I'll probably have to order online but that's not great for practicing. I am interested in converting a Glock 29 to 40s&w for cheap practicing at the range, while still practicing with the 10mm, just less.

I have heard that you can shoot 40s&w out of any Glock 10mm's, some say all you have to do is load and shoot 40, others say you need a conversion barrel, others say good luck it's your hand.

I plan to get a KKM conversion barrel. 40 is shorter, 10mm is longer, I've heard headspacing is an issue and the 40 is just sort of hanging by the extractor.

What else do I have to do to the 29 to make it SAFELY shoot 40? Just a conversion barrel? Or is this not a viable or safe option?

Thanks

Shooting .40 in a 10mm works OK, but is just being held by the extractor instead of headspacing on the case mouth. Better to get a conversion barrel.

I have a G20 and use a Lone Wolf .40 conversion barrel. No other changes required. Lower-powered .40's (eg. 165 gr. Freedom Munitions @900 fps) cause an occasional BTF. I reload them to hotter specs (eg. 180 gr. at 1000 fps) and this does not happen.

good advice.
reload, and shoot all 10mm is mine.
that makes it even cheaper than factory .40.
also more fun!

Be safe and smart. Buy a KKM conversion barrel to safely convert your G29 to 40SW.

https://kkmprecision.com/product/29-match-40sw-2/

The 40SW headspaces on the rim of the cartridge and NOT on the extractor.
Shooting a 40SW round in 10mm barrel is risky, and sooner or later you'll find out why.

Do it right and do it safe. Get a conversion barrel.
All you need is the barrel.

.
more sound advice, IMO.

you will love that G29.
mine is favored over all other pistols owned.
10mm kicks serious booty!

So tell me why? Because people have thousands of 40's through their 10mm barrels with no trouble what so ever.

The case is held center in the chamber regardless if it's a 10 or a 40. It's no different than having a rifle barrel throated deep then shooting standard ammo in them.

Or do we have to go back to 38 in 357.

I see why the experienced guys get tired of arguing with guys that are just guessing. My 29SF shoots identical accuracy using .40s As it does using 10's

Thanks all for the replies, I am planning on getting the KKM conversion barrel, I wouldn't shoot 40 out of the 29 without it. This thread was more about if I needed to do anything else to it.

Just so I'm getting this correct, the conversion barrel holds the 40 round where the 10mm would be in the breech? I watched a video where a guy puts a 10mm round and a 40 round in a 10mm barrel. The 10mm stuck out about a few millimeters while the 40 sat flush. Will the conversion barrel hold the 40 out so the firing pin contacts it normally?

I HIGHLY recommend KKM.

I have a KKM 40SW conversion barrel for my Glock 20. It works perfectly.
I use the original G20 recoil spring assembly and the 10mm magazine.

You can listen to all the neigh sayers OR listen to this--I have a Storm Lake 10mm barrel in my G29. I also have a Storm Lake 10mm to 40SW barrel. When shooting 40SW I NEVER change to the 10 to 40 barrel, its to much bother since the 10mm barrel works fine for 40SW.

+1

I also shoot cast bullets in the G29 (Storm Lake barrel), when I mentioned that I shoot a couple of jacketed bullets to remove any lead build up in the barrel the EXPERTS here implied I was creating a serious hazard and would surely blow up the gun. Has NOT detonated is thousands of rounds & I rarely clean the barrel--still waiting for the explosion.:dancingbanana:

If you want to make that g29 more powerful,
get an extended barrel, a 4.6'' or longer.

It will do anything the g 20 does, I am speaking
from a lot of experience, and the 40 brass can be
loaded long and also get the same power as 10mm
brass, even in the 10mm barrel.

This one will work but you may want to cut it back
some, I have both the six and 4.6 inch.

LWD Barrel M/29 10MM 6.02" Length
Extended length 6.02 inch, 153 mm
Item: LWD-29XL10
Limited Quantities (No Back-Orders)
| Manufacturer: Dasan Machineries Co. LTD
MSRP: $114.95 Your Price: $104.95

for 105.00 you cant go wrong.

In that big g29 you can do some pretty
good things with the 40 and 357sig because
of the longer magazine.

So tell me why? Because people have thousands of 40's through their 10mm barrels with no trouble what so ever.

People also drive thousands of miles drunk off their asses with no trouble.

Study and understand about headspace and why it's important. A round held in place by just the extractor is fine until you get a mismatch with either the cartridge rim or the extractor.

Then you're going to have a big problem. A big loud problem.

You might fire thousands of rounds and never have a problem, but each round fired is taking a risk that you don't have to take.
