Can a holster that accomodates a light be used without the light installed?

I'm at a crossroads and need to make some decisions about holsters as I've just intalled a TLR-6 on my 43x. I don't carry all the time, but do at times and have zero experience with Kydex.

The simple question without going into the logic of why I might want to do this is:
If I were to buy a holster that accommodates my TLR-6 (assuming Kydex) would that holster still properly accomodate and retain the 43x should I uninstall the light for any reason?

Again, I've never owned a Kydex holster, only leather so I don't know what to expect. Without the light I tend to carry OWB at 3:00 or AIWB. I haven't figured out what I want to do, but I want to have at least one holster that can accomodate the TLR-6 and so trying to weigh options.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

That's good to know. Having never owned a Kydex holster I really don't have a clue as to how the retention systems function. As I tend to carry AIWB when not OWB I am concerned about the comfort of the extra width that the light adds to the package. Perhaps I have to find a good concealment OWB holster that accomodates the light and call it a day. If I need to do AIWB I suppose I can take the light of and use one of my other holsters.

Thoughts?

Kydex will never be as comfortable as leather. Never.

That said leather is not suited to weapons lights it appears.

Your whole outlook will change when you switch from a VM2 to a Criterion. It was a complete game changer carrying a full sized pistol. The change in cant may not seem like such a big deal but having owned several Milt Sparks designs I've found his current pinnacle.

A light bearing holster may retain it without the TLR-6, but would probably be wobbly, if it did somewhat retain it.

My main concern is, the screws on the TLR-6 are tiny, and not too robust. I almost stripped the little hex head out of one of the screws. Don't use the little wrench they include, it's cheap and will strip. The TLR-6 isn't really suited to being installed and removed a lot. By design, it's kinda on there, and in my opinion, too much hassle to remove frequently. Not arguing against your reasons, just saying it's not really designed to be moved on and off a lot. Ymmv

Tenicor holsters advertise that they work with or without a light. I’ve never carried in mine without a light because I don’t see the point if you have the space for it, but they say it will work minus a light. My buddy has been carrying his M18 in his without a light as he hasn’t gotten a light yet and says it works flawlessly.

99% of light bearing holsters won’t work without a light though because that’s where the retention is.

I think for the moment I've the the OWB situation solved but I wouldn't trust this for IWB, though the holster is designed IWB/OWB but I don't think it was intended for the light, but I got it to work for OWB. It took some working in to get it to work with the light, but now retains well as I have worked it in. Do I really want to carry AIWB with a light in a Kydex holster? I'm thinking the extra width at the bottom might make it less comfortable, but at this point I don't think I want to be taking the light on and off.

I got this one from Versacarry some time ago as I had a 35% off coupon plus free shipping. I liked it pretty well for AIWB before the light, I don't think it works as well with the light as OWB. I'm still open to holster suggestions.

It depends where on the firearm the holster "grabs". On most of them, the light is too wide or tall to let the holster grab the trigger guard. If you can find one that is snug from the top of the slide to the bottom of the trigger guard, it might work. Most won't work well.

I think I got lucky with the Versacarry slide holster. It took some serious working in, but retains well and is now beginning to draw smoothly and quickly. The key for this one is to pull in the canted direction it's oriented in so the front sight doesn't grab. Not the most refined holster ever, but it can do the job for now. But the retention seems to be pretty much everywhere except where the front sight channel is. No hang ups as long as I don't pull back on the grip when drawing. I'm sure not as smooth as Kydex, but the retention is excellent. I think I'm glad I took the time to work this one in for the light. Might have saved me some $ for the time being. But still looking to try IWB Kydex. I suspect we'll have Memorial Day sales pop up here and there shortly.
