So this might be a stupid question. I was under the impression that the only way to buy a long gun out of your state of residence was to have it sent from an ffl in state"x" to an ffl in your home state. A buddy of mine is telling me that's only the case for hand guns now. My google fue is weak and I can't find a straight answer.

Can you buy a long gun outside of your home state from an ffl and pick it up from that same store?

"A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee’s premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes."

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27 CFR 478.29 and 478.30]

Yes, no, maybe.

It depends on the state you're intending to purchase from. Some states allow out-of-staters to purchase long guns, some states don't. Some states only allow out-of-staters from non-anti-gun states to buy.

Per federal laws, you have to buy handguns from your own home state.

And sometimes it even depends on what state you're from, and the type of long gun you want to buy.

MN, for instance, has a law about needing a pistol purchase permit to buy a handgun, OR any long gun they consider an Assault Weapon. If you walk through some of the gun shops in Fargo, ND (just across the river from Moorhead, MN), you'll see bright-colored tags on some long guns that say "ND residents only" or "MN residents with pistol permit only".

There are a lot of gun laws out there, and if there's any doubt about the legality, most shops will default to "No Sale", as they know you're not a local, so they assume they aren't going to lose too many future sales to you if they say no to this one.

Yes. You can buy a long gun out of state and carry it out. So long as it's legal in your state.

Done it within the last 10 weeks.

Thanks for the input gents

I'm a Virginia resident, and I was able to buy a shotgun in Georgia. Handguns are a different issue. I would need it to be shipped from one FFL to another.

I'm driving down to SC, and I'd like to buy a stripped AR-10 lower. I hope I can do that.
