Are my night sights dim?

Just installed a brand new pair of meprolight tritium night sights, yellow rear and green front. Is this how bright they're supposed to be? They seem dim to me, but this is my first pair of night sights so I have no other sights to compare it to. First two pictures are in pitch black, third is in low light.

I may be in the minority but to me they look fine. Seriously. (Photos are a bit out of focus so the images are a bit soft).

I'm sure that the vendor would exchange them for you if you wanted to. But don't expect them to be any different.

I was also thinking they look fine. The brighter your night sights, the easier it is to see the sights, but the harder it is to see the target past them. That's why red dot scopes can be dimmed way, way down. Consider how close self-defense usually is, how close you have to be to see a threat in the dark and how likely you are to actually use the sights, and you won't worry about it.

Criminals don't let you know they are about to commit a crime against you from 30 yards away and, if they did, you'd be glad your sights were dim, so you could aim and still see your target.

The supplied photos are not helpful. Find someone with a NS-equipted pistol and do a side-by-side comparison under low light conditions if you wish to compare sights. But the real test is how visible they are TO YOU under low light.

FWIW, a NS is of no use under near or full darkness. Where the target can not be distinguished, it's not much help that you can align the sights! The only use I get from a NS in full darkness is that the pistol is a lot easier to find on the bed side.

There are a TON of very likely scenarios where I completely disagree with you.

It's 3am you've fallen asleep on the couch.

Your HD pistol is laying next to you or or on the coffee table next to the couch.

You are abruptly awakened by your front door being kicked in and multiple assailants bull rushing the couch...which lies 10' from the front door.

Night sights will 100% give you an advantage obtaining a fast flash sight picture.

Or are you going to yell out..."Hey, wait a minute while I turn on the family room lights to make sure you are indeed a threat intent on doing me and my family harm?"

We do a lot of ITB training, both with and without lights (pistol mounted and stand alone). I will not own a defensive pistol without tritium or luminous sights.

How are you weighing that? :)

Perhaps you missed the qualification of "full darkness". How do you get your "fast flash sight picture" (whatever that is supposed to be) when the target and you are in full darkness? The answer, of course, is that you can not get any sight picture on a target that you can not see. Sure...you can align the sights in the direction that you think the target may be, but it is no more likely that you'll hit your target than if you just tried some sort of point-and-shoot approach. But your whole construct is so wildly improbable...do you expend time and ammo on it...in some blacked-out range? I spend my live-fire time and preparing for situations that have some measurable probability to occur. :)

What ever...I agree with the value you place on nights sights for any handgun that serves serious purpose as a weapon. My point is that the term "night sights" is inaccurate...such sights serve the purpose of allowing sight alignment when there is still some low ambient light...at the target especially. They won't be of ANY use if the the target is in near or total darkness, unless one intends to base one's aim without the benefit of actually seeing the target. In that case, why use any sights at all.

A "flash sight picture" is worthless unless you can see the target. Hence, if you can't identify and see your target, then "night sights" do little more than alert your position to others, and give you something to see (which isn't your target).
