Archangel stock on Mosin Nagant

I replaced the worn original wood stock on my Mosin with a stock from archangel. I like the looks of it, and it fits me better -due to adjustability-I need a long length of pull-the cheek rest batters my face.
I took it out this a.m. and after two shots felt something wet on my cheek. Blood. I had skinned the side of my face with the cheek rest.
This thing kicks like a mule-much harder then my Model 1917 enfield in 30.06.
Any others have this issue with this particular set up?

The archangel has an adjustable comb. I raised it, and the edge of the comb is what whacked me.
Need to get a scope mount. The iron sights just don't work for me and my bi focals.
If I could get this rifle dialed in where I like it, I would look into cutting the barrel down and dropping in a replacement trigger. After all that I'd have so much money in this thing I couldn't get rid of it.

I don't know if this will help but I remove all the mold lines with a sharp knife on all my plastic stocks. Maybe a little sandpaper on the part that causing your problem will help.
Oh yeah, you will probably never get back what you put in it but you get to have fun with it. When you go to Disneyland you don't get your money back later.

norton, I have an old Mosin that I paid like 80 bucks for back in the mid 90s. Its a decent looking Hex Receiver unit but holy hell the barrel is nothing but pits. It still shoots pretty decent out to about 200 yards on crappy spam can ammo.

Beings that it is not in that good of shape I felt no shame in cutting down the barrel and changing the stock. Also did the scope mount and extended bolt handle.

I have been wanting to try the Archangel stock for a long time but I have not yet. Back when those kits came out the magazines seemed to be problematic. Not sure if they have improved?

Could the cheek rest just use some smoothing of the edges? or do you see this as a design flaw?

Hello,

I've never really heard much positive about the Archangel. It's a good idea, cheaply executed.

The construction is flimsy.
The magazines are very temperamental.

It's just a shade better than the ATI stock, my customers tell me.

I've never had an urge to try it myself. The standard wood stock is just fine to start a build with. You need to lengthen the buttstock by about an inch to reduce the recoil: It's not that the recoil is worse than other full .30 calibers, but rather that the LOP on most military rifles, and especially the Mosin-Nagant, are short.

I have the Archangel stock on one of mine, and never had it cut me. I have the comb raised slightly, get a good cheek weld, and never had a problem with it.

The big thing is, you really have to pull it into the shoulder before firing, to keep it from kicking as much. I got it as much for the detachable mags as anything else, after a break in period all of them work fine. I also bedded mine, which increased accuracy quite a bit. The must have upgrade is the Timney trigger, drops right in to the Archangel without any inletting and will tighten up groups better than any other single thing you can do to a Mosin.

I also have Limbsavers on 4 more, and they work great for both reducing recoil and getting a better length of pull. I did the required inletting on two of them and added Timneys as well.

Every mag I got with mine required a bit of sanding to get to fit well and be reliable. Every one of them had issues at first, such as popping out while firing or failure to feed.

I took some White Out, painted them, let it dry, then seated them. Every place that was making contact, usually one or two spots on each, would flake off the white out. I then lightly sanded them a bit at a time (can take it off, but can't put it back on, so did it in small increments) until they seated uniformly. That was a few years and a few thousand rounds ago, no problems since.

Made me look, have 8 10 round and two 5 round mags.

I only have one mag-it's the 5 rounder. I read on the interwebs that having the bolt closed on a fresh magazine, then working the action, makes the rifle feed just fine. And it does.
I do shoot other high power rifles-like the Garand and the 1917 Enfield and my Swiss K31. I pull all of them tight into my shoulder. No real issues.
