Hey guys. Looking for an ankle holster for my shield 9 and may also get a Glock 26 or similar size. Does anybody have any recommendations for a discreet and secure holster? The shield will have a streamlight tlr-6 and the Glock… unsure yet.

The question for any ankle holster carry is. Can you go from that kneeling position to upright, without any assistance. Be it from a handrail, wall, pushing yourself off the floor with your support hand, etc?

We've had a few people entertain ankle carry, till they realized they could not get back up , without assistance. If you're young, or middle aged and healthy / active, great. Some shooters can't put their shoes on w/out having to catch their breath :)

lol yes, I’m 36 and very able bodied. I want to try it with my shield first and see if I like it, but don’t want to be deterred by a crap ankle holster. I know how crap holsters can deter carry.

Another question with ankle holsters is what pants will you be wearing . The pants leg will inhibit the drawing of the gun if too tight.
The large grip of the M&P shield will be a hinderance to the draw .
You could slit the pants leg by the ankle and use Velcro to close it .
Is this for a backup gun or primary carry?
I’ll be wearing loose cargos and at some points boots. It’ll be a primary carry during the day. If not the shield, what else is recommended?

I used to carry a Smith J frame in an ankle holster while on duty as a BUG but I don’t remember the holster I used. I’ve never used the Galco but I have had other holsters from them and know they make quality stuff. I don’t believe I would use ankle carry as a primary either but if that’s what you want to do go for it.

The reason I want to ankle carry is due to printing during the day sweat wise and moving around and having to squeeze between things throughout the day. It’s not at all ideal but I currently don’t carry anything during the day except a karambit. Ankle carry just popped into my head last night.

I use an Uncle Mike’s Velcro model.. I usually only carry a S&W BG380, it’s small and light and I can dance with it on. I bought it specifically for my daughter’s wedding and similar outings.

I carried my j-frame with it, it handles a variety of small guns quite well.

A lot depends on your size and the gun size..

Ritchie gun leather is best ankle holster bar none. Expensive and will absolutely last you a lifetime. I had the older Alessi version ( Skip Ritchie was Lou’s partner in the holster business until Lou’s death) worn for a couple decades in all sorts of weather. With practice they can be fast. if you are an office worker doing most of the time seated it can be close to one of the most efficient methods of carry but lots of practice is required. Only reason I stopped ankle carry was moving to the southwest and I am in shorts 90% of the time.

I have carried a backup on my ankle on duty for twenty years. I’ve tried them all and believe it or not the Uncle Mikes ankle holster is the best.

It’s low profile and the buckle takes the weight off of the velcro so the Velcro doesn’t wear out. I replaced my original after about 15 years.

I have seen more than one ankle gun come flying off during a ground fight or foot pursuit. Mine has always stayed put.

I carry a G26 as a backup to my issued G17, so it’s not a a micro gun. Been doing it so long I don’t even realize it’s there.

I own several brands, including 2 or 3 Galco Ankle Gloves and an Alessi. What I USE are my several Uncle Mike's nylon holsters. They hold the gun tighter to your ankle and more securely than any other and you can take the thumb break strap off and reverse it, depending on whether you want a thumb break or, more practical, a break you can pull up with your finger as you pull your pants up. The Galcos are very comfortable, but heavy guns will flop around, they are direct velcro, rather than having a strap through a buckle like Uncle MIke's, so they are less secure and harder to tighten up.

You can also get an uncle mike's on eBay for about $20, and one holster will fit your Shield and your Glock.

I have used them since I got my first backup gun in about 1988.

Here's one for your guns for $20. Uncle Mike's Ankle Holster Black Size 12 RH - PN#88121 | eBay

I wore a Glock 27 for many years as a BUG off and on duty. I think I used every ankle holster on the market. None of them were comfortable with the gun. The most comfortable gun I've carried was an air weight Smith 442. For my money the most comfortable and most concealable holster is a IWB esp a Milt Sparks Summer Special II.
