I don't carry and am looking for an OWB kydex (I think) to holster a G19 to be able to do some GSSF and other training/class work. The Safariland ALS seems to get a lot of votes but I've also seem mention that it might be too much retention. Any comments on that?

Also, the models are very confusing but from what I've been able to gather, the 6378 and 7378 seems to be a popular model as it can be worn via belt or paddle. Any preference between these two?

I love my ALS 6378 and exclusively use it while hunting with a Springfield XDm .45. I don’t think it would be too much retention.

I have no experience with the 7378.

Since you don’t carry, I see no reason ALS won’t work for you. I use ALS rigs when I OWB carry larger guns like my 41 in the city, and I practice with them regularly - no issues.

The 637x series are more traditional heatformed Kydex or similar, and the 737x are injection molded 7TS models. Both are good, I have a slight preference for the 7TS version.

Paddles are bad! They can catch and peel back as you sit down. I use a paddle at the range for quick and easy on/off, but not for extended CCW.

The dept I work for specifically recommends the Safariland ALS system for a duty holster system. I would not have bought it unless I was going to use it on duty. IHMO, there is no reason for that much retention unless it is a duty gun.

Agree on the paddle comment - I just don’t get along with them. All my ALS holsters have the lower profile belt loop.

Don’t forget there are different levels of ALS. Does your duty rig have a hood? IMO that would be overkill for non-LE carry. But, I think basic ALS plus a 6006 ALS guard is great for OWB carry.

Why do you prefer the 7TS version of the 6378? I’m thinking about getting one or the other for my P229.

OP, why are you getting a retention holster if you are only going to use it for GSSF and classes? The only reason I own a retention holster is that it is my duty rig. I never bought a retention holster for CCW.
I think that's exactly why I'm asking here. Did you see the title of this thread?

I searched "glock owb training class" and saw the ALS recommended more than a few times but just wanted to make sure it was right for me.

The ALS system is so ridiculously easy to manipulate that I barely call it retention. I have used an ALS holster (without SLS or hood) in IDPA matches. In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a master class IDPA shooter.

Agree with 9x45, you only need a holster to put the gun in on the range, retention is for the street & even then, only on a OWB rig. For range use, a good paddle holster works great. I use a Comptac on the range, Safariland is fine too. You almost have to take your pants off to get the paddle off.

I always have a thunbsnap or ALS on my carry holsters.

I think it would be fine for the class with the belt slot attachment installed the. The paddle on those things is HUGE, is hard to get off without removing belt, and doesn’t fit the curve if my body at all and is not comfortable to me.

I often buy a cheap used Fobus for the the guns I don’t carry just for the range.

I use a Safariland when I am RSOing. Mine was marketed by 5.11 and called the "Thumb Drive" holster (level 2 retention) and you can set it up as a belt-slide or paddle. There is definitely not too much tension, and the thumb drive is easy to use when releasing the weapon. I bought the 5.11 version for my G19 simply because it was less expensive than the S'land; money that can go toward more reloading supplies.
