I've got a 10 year made in Spain Beeman. That'll do it, no problemo.
A few weeks ago I killed 4 ***** in less than 5 minutes.

I have been thinking of buying a pellet gun lately, probably in this price range. I see this notice on Dick's website. I am hardly well-versed in gun laws, but it seems this one is not available in all of these states. Didn't know there were these types of restrictions.

The sale or shipment of this product to residents of California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Puerto Rico and Canada is prohibited

You want a good air rifle, look no further than RWS. Gamo's are cheap, Beeman has gone down hill, and the really high end air rifles are gonna cost ya $1800...

AirgunsofArizona has the RWS 34 pro for $198 which is a pretty good deal.

In a spring piston gun, conventional wisdom is not to use the PBA pellets, as they don't allow for enough resistance during the firing cycle and can damage the gun.

Crosman Premier Hollow Points from Walmart seem to be a good all around pellet

Use a 22 and CB sub-sonics.

I've used them to take two problem skunks, about a dozen striped gophers, and two or three dozen cats so far this year.

It sounds like a pellet gun firing, and it hits considerably harder. Out of my CZ 452 Lux, its also considerably more accurate than a pellet rifle. I can hit and kill something the size of a skunk at 40-50 yds.

I had an RWS when I was a kid, killed many rabbits with it. not sure how tough a wood chuck is though, they don't bother me so I let them go.

I think my best was an old crossman with a busted, taped up stock and no sights, dropped a rabbit about 30 yard in the woods, hit it right in the jugular.

Yep, you zap just about anything sub 20 lbs with a CB, and its dead, the biggest skunk I hit only made it about 5 yards with a body shot, and the CB still exited the other side (surprised the hell out of me.)

I have an RWS 52 .22 cal with a 3-12 scope and there is no way I would use it for shooting groundhogs unless I can get a clean head shot well under 25yds, the energy just is not there. Thats using some heavy Beeman Kodiak pellets, not these ultra light junk magic pelllets Gamo pushes. For a good clean kill you are going to want a PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) and they cost money.

If you want something for hunting and hog killing a .22 AR6 in the link below would work well.

I really hope your skunks are downwind when you pull the trigger!!

Define *fortune......
Yeah a price range would help. Any airgun that shoots over 800 fps is plenty powerful enough for what you are asking. Cheaper ones like Gamo won't be too accurate. I would recommend a RWS model 34 for starters, with a scope its a sub $250 rifle. RWS is great budget German made air rifles.

I am into airguns, and I own several. My favorite is a Beeman HW97K with a Leupold EFR 3-9 on it. Its a .177 and shoots about 900 fps. I can get 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards, and have cleanly taken ground squirrels with it out to 65 yards.

under 400, unless its really awesome.
If you are willing to spend $400, get a Beeman R9. They are one of the best air rifles out there, and are made to last a life time. Order from Straight Shooters Airguns, they have great service, great prices and are real helpful guys if you have any questions.

Here's a combo with a Bushnell scope

I learned the hard way that they spray when shot. One was in my yard and I shot it when its tail end was pointed at my running swamp cooler. My whole house was filled with skunk stink.

They don't if you brain/spine shoot em, but that little skull makes it a tough shot, and the neck isn't very big.

On skunks I've found that the CCI segmented hollow point (breaks into 3 peices) at about 1700 fps, is really the ticket. They're louder (real gunshot loud) but man do they drop medium game fast. Hit a running 40-50 lb dog (feral not pet)through the lungs and he piled up dead about 9 yards later, one of the peices went through his heart, the other two went through lungs and exited the other side.

Is there really that big of a pest problem up there in Alaska?

Really wanted an air rifle to take out some wood chucks at about the same distance you want but decided on a nice .22 instead because it was cheaper and all the air rifles I looked at got less than stellar reviews. Now I understand you may not be able to use a real gun where you live just letting you know what I ended up doing.
