9mm aversion

So…

I’m a little puzzled by folks who dismiss this round for various reasons. I get the fact that some folks don’t want to use it for home defense or self defense and opt for a more powerful round. I’m not talking about that. I’m referring to folks that won’t even buy them as range or recreational guns/competition guns, etc.

Here’s a little secret…there’s likely more R&D into platforms for 9mm than all other centerfire handgun calibers combined. Some of the coolest pistols both past and present have been chambered for 9mm and only 9mm, the list goes on and on. See all these new high end pistols entering the market? Guess what caliber they’re chambered for. Same goes for all the new polymer duty guns.

The way I see it is pure stubbornness, but maybe I’m missing something. Maybe shooting 9mm insults some folk’s manhood. I have no idea.

Not that it really matters, it’s just a curiosity.

Anyone care to discuss?

I tend to agree- I am 6’2”, 205 and go to the gym often. I have and shoot 10mm, 45 clolt and ACP, 357 msg, 42 msg, 44mag and others. I carry 9mm for their often slim design, reduced recoil in fast shooting and research suggests it is nearly as effective as 40 or 45 in hood quality HP 124 or 147 weights. The other calibers are usually to large and bulky for actual daily carry and in smaller pistols have much less recoil so are faster back on target.

Miami 1986 and the FBI's move away from an underperforming round tarnished 9mm.
Modern ballistics have brought me back to it but I understand the skeptics who think the 'move' of agencies back to 9mm is about saving money or placating weak shooters.

Caliber wars will never end and so long as what everyone wants is available, I'm ok with that.

I certainly get that. Just weird people think about that for a gun for range use.

I carried either a Belgian made Browning Hi Power in 9 mm, or a Colt Commander in 45 ACP from the late 70's until I bought my first polymer pistol in 2009. The High Power had a lot of the bluing worn off and had the appearance of a very well used pistol. The Colt was in Satin Nickel and had a few scratches on it as well. Both pistols were well loved and well used. Both were stolen from my truck at a resuraunt following a range trip. I had just bought a brand new Glock 19 Gen 3 a month before for a very reasonable price as the Gen 4's were on their way in and was trying to get used to carrying it (such a lightwaigt pistol compared to what I had been carrying). Needless to say, I was heart broken. I wished that I had left the Glock in the truck as opposed to either one that got stole....I suppose that we all live and learn....I now normally carry either a Gen 5 Glock 17 or and M&P Shield Plus. I am satisfied with modern day 9 mm rounds.

Most of my handguns are 40 S&W. Also have, and CCW: .32 ACP, 9mm Kurtz, 38 Special, 9mm Luger, 45 ACP, 45 GAP, and 45 Long Colt.
Caliber Diversity is a wonderful thing.
Y‘all have a good weekend.

I probably have more firearms chambered in 9mm than any other caliber, even 22LR. I compete with it, I have no problem with it for self defense against **** sapiens. I would switch to the centimeter or larger for defense against mean things with teeth and claws but other than that the 9mm is one of those do everything pretty well cartridges.

Alright, wtf. Why did that get blocked out? Is that not the scientific name for humans? It was when I was in school.

... I do think a lot of folks equate every gun they own with this or that self-defense scenario. I think there is a lower proportion of gun owners today who buy guns intended primarily for the range, even though that's where 99% of gun use occurs.
Pretty much this for me.

While I enjoy going to the range and shooting I can't say that I've ever bought any firearm primarily "for" the range except for .22lr guns. (And I mostly see those as training guns for friends and family). "Range toys" really don't appeal to me and I have no interest in having guns that serve no purpose beyond turning money into noise.

Everything i buy has some kind of defensive purpose even if it's a very unlikely use. I have had the greatest variety of carry guns & potential carry guns, several that are kept as home defense guns (both pistol & long guns), guns in case war or societal collapse shows up in my community, and a couple that are essentially ban-resistant models in case state laws change or work required me to move outside free America.

I'm sure I'd enjoy competition, but life is too busy raising kids right now and family is a priority over time-consuming personal hobbies.

As all that relates to 9mm, my first couple handguns years ago were 9mm but I soon became enamored with .45 ACP. Soon after, other than a .357, all my handguns were .45s. At that time, I had no interest in 9mm because my handguns were defense oriented and 9mm wasn't my defensive choice.
Later, when small guns fit my needs, I picked up a KT P-11 and that opened the door to 9mm which has led to numerous 9mm carry guns over the years.

The 9mm is like the 22/250 rifle to me. It’s perfect for carrying around, big enough for 99% of what you need it to do and just plain fun to shoot. For HD I prefer the large frame 40 S&W but I always carry a micro 9 with standard pressure 124 grain hollow points. The 22/250 is said to be too small for deer and antelope but I have killed a ton of them with the 250. It’s just fine like the 9mm is.

I love guns. I don’t care what they’re chambered in.
I guess you could say I’m pan-caliber-sexual or something :ROFLMAO:

I mainly carry a 10mm since it ballistically superior and more versatile. But my backup guns or guns carried when something smaller is in order include 9mms.

No aversion here. 🤷‍♂️
And if there are gun owners averse to literally the most popular handgun round in the world, that’s weird.
