7.62x39 ARs suck.
I would not say they suck. For all practicality, they are useful if you want to shoot the cheap steel-cased Russian ammo. However, the 6.8SPC is a more effective round. Quite frankly, I prefer the .308 over the 6.8SPC, but I will always be a huge fan of the 5.56. I have been shooting that since 1978. I do have an AR (KAC SR-25 Match/Mk11 Mod 0) in 7.62 NATO.

I have had several POF's in .308, heavy but accurate. I was considering one the other day, as I recently got back into the .308 business with a USN Garand.....

Right now I am enamored with this M4 build in 7.62 x 39. I looked at a Colt Sporter in the same caliber, but the store was asking beyond new prices for a gun with no magazine.

AR-wise, I am happy with my POF in 6.8. I just started reloading for it.

Silencio, thanks for the intel on whatshisname. I spent 28 years with trained professionals trying to hurt my feelings, someone whose claim to fame is a platinum membership to GT does not have a prayer.

Wrenchbender, I feel duly admonished, thank you sir. ;)

For hunting and combat I would much rather have the 6.8. For targets, varmints and 3 gun I would use the 5.56.
Anything the diameter of the 7.62x39 or Grendel is a little too wide for the mags to work properly and weakens the bolts too much by thinning the web that the bolt lugs attach to.

What about for home defense?? I know both will work but some claim their wouldn't be much of a difference at close range between the 5.56 compared to the 6.8.

There are lots of better choices for all sorts of applications other than 5.56MM.......everything is a compromise.

The questions are, how much do you want to shoot, and can you afford the ammo to do so? Good shooting is like any other sport, it takes practice to get good and stay good at it. Are you ready to foot the bill to do so? You can like Ferraris, Dom Perignon, and Rolex watches.....they're better and more expensive than other similar products. That doesn't mean they're the best choices, or what you can afford.

And if all you're concerned about is your SHTF scenario, where will you find ammo when everything goes ****-up?
Yeah this post kind of points to the 5.56 round because things seem to be getting****-up. In chaos the 6.8 will be hard to get.
