Just picked up a G35 upper and going to plop it onto my G22 lower. My plan is to purchase a KKM barrel for it and shoot .357 Sig. I might even carry it.

Question; if I shoot Underwood Xtreme Defenders, 65 grain, .357 Sig out of a 5.32 inch barrel, can I expect to get over the vaunted 2200 ft/sec threshold? Am I now in rifle territory? Has anyone shot this round out of this barrel length and chrono’d it?

I’d do it myself but for the lack of a chronograph, a KKM barrel and the Underwood rounds which are perpetually out of stock. Just a few minor details [emoji13]. Thanks for the help.

I don't have a chrono anymore to try it. But, they do advertise 2100fps which I assume is with a 4 inch barrel. So, theoretically it can happen. Its a good question and consider this a tag to see results if anyone knows.

But I speculate results will vary round to round. Some may barely do it, and will come in barely under. But, I would like to see myself.

first off, Spartan24, that's funny I don't care who you are!!

I reload 357 Sig, never the lighter bullets, 125 TC and Loud Shout (read longshot) and am getting right around 1600 fps but that's pushing the upper limit.

357 Sig really benefits from barrel length so it wouldn't surprise me to push past 2000 fps with lighter bullets, my only concerns would be if they stabilize at that velocity and if there is enough caliber diameter on the lighter/shorter bullet for proper neck tension.

if you really want to push the 357 Sig to max velocity, there was a poster before the last forum update, can't remember his name, but he had a model 20 with a custom 357 Sig barrel throated long so he could increase COL and pack more powder in the case, if I remember correctly, he was pushing 125 TC to the yikes!! level, over 1800 fps and was talking about trying different powder to increase velocities.

don't know what happened to him, maybe he blew himself up so buyer beware.

I reload also for .357 Sig but only mild loads. I don’t trust myself to get wild with a bottle necked round. The stabilizing question and also the neck tension questions are interesting ones. I trust Underwood to load stuff to the maximum speed however. The Lehigh bullets are the perfect bullets for this IMO. I just want to see how fast they can be pushed in a pistol that can be carried and if they perform at the ragged edge the way they are supposed to.

IMHO, forget all the noise about ballistics. That’s a black hole you want to avoid, because for every “con” argument you’ll find a “pro”. If you like the round, carry and shoot it. They’re all good.

I have a 35 MOS with Alphawolf 357 barrel. It's great. I've only been shooting factory (wish it was loaded hotter) ammo since it's issued but we haven't had any issues with putting deer down with it. Did two this week, quick and easy. Haven't shot anyone since we switched away from .40s. We've been issued Glock 31s since 2008.

I always think of the 9x25 Dillon as the .357 Sig Magnum. What a round. I bet with a 65 gr Lehigh bullet, you could get almost 2500 fps out of a Glock 20. So far, Underwood is only making the 9x25 with the 90 gr Lehigh bullet.

Still waiting for that KKM 9x25 Dillion barrel for my G20 for over a year [emoji57]

I have a G-35 with a 357 Sig barrel and I have a bunch loaded up with a 124 grain hp with an average of 1530 fps. That seemed quite good enough for me. However I been really interested in loading up some Lehigh 9mm projectiles in 357 Sig but they don't have that data on their website anymore. I'd love to chrony them but I shot my Chrony sometime back (duuuh.).

Just checked the Lehigh website, you’re right, only load data for the 9mm. I’m wondering if they would give you some load data for the .357 Sig if you called or emailed them

Theoretically, every inch of barrel will gain or lose 50 fps. But in real life it ain't necessarily so, and individual barrels of the same length can vary by more than 50 fps. Anyone who's chronographed a lot of guns, both rifles and pistols, know that there are fast barrels and there are slow barrels regardless of length. Even guns with consecutive serial numbers that are made by the same manufacturer that came off the assembly line the same day, can vary anywhere from 10 fps to 50 fps when firing the same ammo, and the only way to know if you have fast barrel or a slow barrel is to chronograph it.

That being said, you are more likely to get higher velocities out of a longer barel than a shorter one, but unless you have a chronograph, all you can do is buy a longer barrel and hope for the best. But if you really want to know, (And you may not WANT to know) Chronographs are not that expensive or hard to use. One precaution is that most Chronographs have metal rods holding the skyscreens and it's best ro replace them with wooden rods so if a stray bullet hits they will break and not damage the chronograph.

But if I were you, I wouldn't obsess so much over every last fps of velocity. A 65 grain bullet anywhere close to 2000 fps is going to be reasonably flat shooting and do a lot of damage when it hits anything whether it's going 23-2400 fps or "Only" 2000-2200. Additionally, as a defensive round the 357 Sig, and it's big brother the 357 magnum, have an excellent track record ina actual street shootings with the 125 grain bullet traveling at a mere 13-1400 fps out of a short barrel and possibly more out of a longer one.
