Finally getting around to getting a semi-auto military-style rifle to hunt, protect and sport shoot with. More of a fan of the AK platform just because I used it in some situations in service and kept using it when I got out. Now I've been looking for a .308 platform. Although I like the Galil, it doesn't lock when empty which could be an issue under duress. The HK/PTR is a pretty decent rifle, but beats up the brass which hampers reloading. The FAL is another great rifle that hasn't been totally ruled out yet since there is only one standard (I know there's both inch and metric) for parts, mags and just a matter of getting accustomed to the manual of arms. The AR platform seems to hold the greatest accuracy potential. I'm familiar from my service days with the weapon, and it's actually a good one. But the .308 iteration is AR or DPMS based, but not really. I can spend about 2K and probably get a decent gun, but still need stuff, or spend $750-1000 and have more money to hopefully work out the kinks. Then there should be money left over for ammo. What's everybody think? Don't mind mind all opinions, since I have't spent my money and one or more of you may help me to settle things. Thought about DPMS although they were put out of business. They seem to be what so many others work off of. Diamondback seems to make a pretty good gun. I REALLY like the DB 10 pistol, but hate to lose the velocity past 300 yards since here in middle Georgia there could be 300-700 yards. So I'll probably get the 16" I like PSA but don't like being a beta tester even if they are great folks. But Y'all give me some thoughts. ...Sorry to be so long winded, but I've never spent this much on a firearm even when I was a gun dealer.....

Just my opinion of course, but I think the low end level of the AR platform offered by the solid firearms manufacturers, are surprisingly good rifles... I’d keep more of my moola and go lower budget... Just check availability and prices of the parts for the standard type changes you may make...I’ve shot several entry level AR’s in the past few years of different calibers and was pretty darn impressed..My two cent opinion...good luck.

There's a dealer about 45 minutes away that had a DPMS Oracle. The entry level .308 a lot of folks swear by and go on to customize. they also had the Diamondback a Springfield and two others before you went to the uppity brands. Nothing wrong with them if you want to spend that kind of money. But my 60-something year old eyes don't shoot like when I was in the jungles so it might be a waste...

Aero Precision M5 complete upper and complete lower or build your own are about the best way to get into a good quality rifle without having to float a note at the bank. I have a relatively lightweight one I built using mostly Aero parts with a Faxon pencil profile 18” barrel and a Superlative Arms Adj. gas block. It shoots great and isn’t such a brick to carry! Love the ATLAS S-ONE rail I have on mine.

Mark in GA

I bought a DPMS LRT-SASS (.308) years ago, and can't complain one bit.

Zero parts breakage, 100% reliable!

Don't know what there like anymore, since being bought out buy Remington Outdoors.

Yeah, some aren't aware that when the holding company bought out Remington, "Freedom Group", they shuttered DPMS, Bushmaster, Tapco and AAC in April. That really complicates some things. How heavy is that SASS? I would have loved a Colt (20, but they quit selling to the public

PSA 308 AR
Good as any for $600-700
They give you a free dog too

Gotten some input on the Aero Precision components as well...Yeah meant to say Colt 6920, but had someone suggest a POF Edge, just don't know about the finicky piston systems in AR platforms even tho the FAL and HK don't have that problem...

She's no lightweight! I think with the scope, bipod, etc., it's around 13lbs.
I think the gun alone, is slightly under 12lbs.

There are, in fact, multiple .308 pattern ARs and not all parts are interchangeable. DPMS actually had three different patterns. I have been through 7 different .308 pattern ARs over the years and currently have the Daniel Defense DD5V1, which is not mainstream, but one of the better ones on the market. If you are thinking around $1K, don't even look at DD, JP, LMT, LWRC, Seekins or Les Baer.

The enhanced bolts in the .308 pattern ARs are a good idea, while likely overkill in AR15s. The premium .308 pattern ARs have them the budget ones do not, so that is the one upgrades I always suggest if you go for something under $1K. Aero, LMT would be two I would look at in the over $1K but not crazy range.

Got a PSA 20" SS upper. It has a heavy barrel but shoots surprisingly tight groups.
Also bought PSA lower. Mines a gen2. Had issues ejecting Federal168gr smk due to oal.
Was a little under gassed. Sent back to PSA and came back a little over gased so I added an adjustable gas block and it is a very soft great shooting rifle. Super pleased.

On my PSA 308 AR the extractor broke. Used a DPMS replacement. Works fantastic.

PSA rifle takes the PMAG’s G3 also. More choices and reasonably priced.

I just built one here under quarantine. Aero upper and Lower. Lantac bolt. 20" 1-10 Krieger barrel no threads. Aero lower parts. Magpol stock and grip. Geissle High Speed National Match trigger <-----guys this is worth it. Just tested fired it so far.

Optic of choice is a S&B PMII 10x. Saving my pennies for that. It was fun and easy to put together. I've test fired it with no issues. I like the ones I build better than the ones I buy but they don't have good resale for obvious reasons. I used the magpol rifle stock rather than a "carbine" type. I have a Danial Defense but it has too many proprietary parts to suit me. Don't like a gun that you have to rely on the factory for a replacement barrel.
