USP has a solid track record.
Yes it’s blocky but my USP 9 fits my medium sized hands better than a G17.
I think if the military issued USP9s instead of Beretta M9s they’d have never switched to the Sig p320.
And as one who also has a 92 Inox and a p320 .45, they’re all service grade, but if I could only keep one, it’d be the USP for my Last Pistol Ever. I think HK is missing the boat by not bringing a USP 10mm to market.
Still, the VP9 has excellent ergonomics, like the Walther PPQ. Easier to conceal. And for carry, a striker has some advantages over a hammer IMHO.

USP is somewhat higher quality but unless you plan on shooting a 100k rounds through them I would not worry about it.
To me the the VP9 seems the least quality of those that you have listed, hard to beat the quality and durability of the USP in the HK lineup.
The VP9 feels to be so much lower in quality than the P30's or the USP. However, I would not consider the USP to be higher quality than the P30. I place them on equal footing as far as quality, however the P30 steel mag is much better than the USP polymer mag. The ergonomics of the P30 push it to the top for me. I have a USP9, USP9c, P2000, P30 x2, P30L x2 (9mm and 40), USP45, HK45, HK45C... and I enjoy shooting the P30L's the most.

Is this based on opinion or are there issues with the VP9?

My VP9's and VP40 were both lower quality compared to any of my other HK's. The sad thing for me was getting rid of them. They were such natural POA and shot very accurate. It was the finger sting that drove me to sell them.

the HK USP is the little brother of the USSOCOM MK23

tough enough to make it through USP HELL WEEK and ask for seconds, the engineering team at HK really did lot of testing on this design, probably some of the most extreme testing ever on a pistol.

Special Operations Forces also use the HK USP pistols , they actually prefer the size of a service pistol more than the original full sized HK MK23

If you go the USP route then look at an Expert. Match trigger, longer sight radius, can use a jet funnel and the barrel is hand fitted to the slide. If you are really hooked then look at the Elites.

While I feel the USP is a better pistol, and I would rather have that than the VP9, I can say that the VP9 that I own is probably the most comfortable and accurate gun (to me) out of all of my pistols.

This is very strange and confusing because I have at least 25 pistols, both semi auto and revolvers (meant to say had before the boating accident) that are a lot more expensive and better built, but something about my VP9 just makes me smile every time I shoot it.

I ended up doing what any rational gun enthusiast would do. I bought a USP 9... and a VP9 (I agree with the shoot ability of the VP9). Then I also grabbed a USP45 just to be safe! I feel like the USP line is higher quality than the VP series, but only my opinion to back up my claim.

I recently bought a VP-40 and while I like it a lot so far I was not wowed like I thought I would be with the “amazing quality” of the HK brand and hype. I have a USP .40 coming to me tomorrow and am wondering what the experience will be with that one. I got a good deal on the VP-40 but paid an HK price for the HSP. I have wanted a USP for a long time and just finally decided to get one. I hope to be in awe of the HK awesomeness more with the USP. We will see.

The VP has a much better trigger and ergonomics! Build quality does go to the USP line. All the components are studier and its a more proven firearm, but the trigger even the LEM is not as good.

A number posts claim the VP is less quality but no reasons why.

We always go back and forth on which is better/ higher quality.
Currently I have only a P30 and a VP9 in the HK department however I have had 5 USPs/
Though I liked them all and had them for a substantial period of time with many rounds through them all I leaned towards the USPC more than the full size even in 45.

They are great and yes, are tanks.
That said the VP9 is no slouch either and I am very happy with it and it's quality.

Yeah, the only thing really "lacking" on the VP series is it has some stamped parts, Most notably the slide catch/release levers.
