I bought a Glock 19 gen 5 mos about a year ago and put about 1000 rounds through it at our local New Jersey range (Full Metal Jacket). I did occasionally add a Feyachi light and sometimes a Dark Hour standoff device/compensator but sometimes shot with neither. After one year of careful use the polymer broke through the slot on the pic rail. I showed the guys at the range who are Glock Armorers and they said it should be covered under warranty so send it back to the factory which I did. I got a call back this week from Glock who said it was not covered by the warranty and the devices on the pic rail caused the failure.I asked if that means that the pic rail is just ornamental and should not be used. No real answer. So it cost me $40 to send it to them and I guess they will charge me to send it back plus the $100 they are charging me for a new frame.
With all due respect, I think this sucks. The gun looks brand new because I take great care of it and never dropped it. I did not use a holster because the range does not allow it. I guess I will have to sell it so I can buy a gun with a real pic rail that I can use. So much for Glock perfection. By the way I happened to watch a video today with Taran Butler who has a Dark Hour Standoff device on his Glock 19 and really likes it. I guess I should warn him not to use it

Did you use the standard or compensated device? The one with the compensator looks like it screws on vertically, which may be why GLOCK blamed the device. The standard appears to have a screw that goes through the entire device horizontally, so perhaps they felt it isn’t compatible with the rail.

Sorry to hear about your frame.

Completely understand where you are coming from and it could have been worse. Most places that deny a warranty claim would have returned your frame and or offered you a new one at retail. I bet the gun you get back will be completely rebuilt both internally and with a new frame. In reality, not a bad deal considering Gen 5 frames go for around $300.

I had to look up what the accessory was. Admittedly, I had no idea what a "stand-off device" was.

I went their website and found this:

Did you use a torque wrench / driver so you could tighten to spec (without over-tightening)?

Adjust it wrong and the slide impacts it on closing. Kind of a known problem and definitely not what the rail is intended for. Maybe anticipated misuse, but that's a stretch for product liability in this case.

I’m trained in the art of “turn it until it stops,” it’s a constant battle for me. One upside to losing muscle-mass as I get older, is I don’t have the strength to ruin as many things tightening them down.

That makes sense.

The rail is for a light or laser and isn't intended to have things bolted to it as the stand off device does.

I'm not aware of any other instances where the polymer rail was damaged using it as intended.

Sure, they have a bolt on bayonet but that's not what the rail section is for either and I imagine it wouldn't hold up to well being used like that either.

That would be like buying a 95,000.00 dollar Dodge Hellcat Charger new. And having a 150 horsepower flash update done to the computer blowing up the engine, and wanting Dodge to give you a free 35,000.00 motor. If your frame broke from shooing it. You should get a new frame. But not with aftermarket parts installed.

Failed polymer?
I’m thinking poorly designed crap possibly improperly installed is more likely.
I did ask Dark Hour if they have seen this before. I have not heard back yet. I will post when I hear. Of note, though, Taran Butler has a video showing him using this device on his Glock 19. He notes in the video that the device does reduce felt recoil and he likes it. He is probably the most famous and successful shooter in the world and a Glock enthusiast. His video does not mention any issue with poor design. etc. in fact, just the opposite. Also, by definition, the device sits beyond the muzzle so it is never contacted by the muzzle and simply sits on the pic rail.
Meanwhile, it was carefully installed and torqued. Also, the person at Glock actually thought that the light that I frequently used caused the crack. Either way, this experience was not perfection. Not a big deal or monumental but just a short sighted approach to customer service.
