Haven’t seen much info on anybody trying to run .380 in a 43 except one video of a guy actually cycling it reliably once.
Just thinking it would be good for training new shooters with. I know the grip is going to be crucial for getting to run but has anyone here tried it?

That's what the 42 is for. Trying to run .380 through a 9mm is akin to running .40 through a 10mm. Will it work, maybe, but the round will rely on being held by the extractor, not properly seating in the chamber. Accuracy won't be that great since the bullet has to jump the gap from the cartridge to the lands and grooves. Poor idea in the long run.

A 42x has been tossed around for a while now as a good idea. It fits a needed market with older shooters and comfortable geometry. In a pinch, the .380 would be ok in the smaller slide 43 but I can see issues with headspace as mentioned above. I may give it a try next range session anyway.
Glock could have easily designed their models to be converted but of course they would sell fewer firearms and that isn’t their business strategy. We .40 and 10mm owners get the aftermarket love at least.

.380, that's what the 42 is for, and I agree, it's no where near a 43X/48 sized guns, but since those don't come in .380 I guess the 42 is your one choice.

Nah. Why bother? They can start with 22 Long Rifle like everyone else and move up to 9mm in a service sized handgun. Let's not overstate or create a problem.

I tried it once in a G19 and it would not cycle. And yes, the G19 has a heavier slide than a G48 but the recoil spring is calibrated to work with the slide weight in either case and the bottom line is that in a recoil-operated pistol, a 380 does not produce enough recoil to reliably operate the pistol.

And a pistol that does not operate reliably is not the best thing for a new shooter to train with, because you just want them to learn the basics and not introduce whole new level of difficulty for them to have to deal with.

The best thing you can do with a new shooter is to start them out with a gun that has a little more weight to it than a G43 or a G48, like a Glock 19, and the wider grip also distributes the recoil over a larger portion of the hand which helps reduce felt recoil as well. Also ear protection is important such as using both earplugs and ear muffs because there is a natural inherent fear of loud noises.

The 9mm really doesn't recoil all that much and there are plenty of videos on Youtube of small children skillfully shooting 9mm handguns

There is (or used to be) a 9MM Makarov conversion barrel available for the the 43. The Mak is intermediate between the the 380 and 9mm, but closer to the 380. The days of cheap 9mm Mak are long gone, but it does seem to indicate that what you are asking might be feasible with a barrel and mag swap and may be a lighter spring. A reliable mag would likely be the sticking point.

As an aside, I've got a lot of experience with handloading the Mak and thought about getting a 43 just to do the conversion and see what the cartridge could do in a locked breech design.
