I had the castle nut spin loose on a couple different un staked lowers I bought. First one I re tightened and loctited and that one never budged again through probably a couple thousand rounds.

After the 2nd time I had it happen on another I Got a center punch and went through all of the others staking each in 2 spots. It never happened again.

Cost 9 bucks and took 10 minutes. I know conventional wisdom is it does not need to he super aggressive to work but I am not
Comfortable seeing barely any metal moved over. When I see that I'll usually tap it out a tiny but further.

First time it happened it damaged the rear takedown pin spring and that came to be my first education in how a Lower goes together and how tiny springs can drive you ape**** crazy. I known the basics now but I am a shooter not a builder. I don't have an interest in wrenching on guns and dealing with that stuff so I'd rather add in the cheap quick insurance that things won't unscrew and twist loose.

One of the reasons I like PSA built lowers is even the lowest end stuff I've bought off them came with well staked castle nuts which is not the case with some others.

Picked up 2 DD rifles last week…the stake jobs were sub par, and one rifle had a crooked buttstock that was too far out for me to be able to ignore. Loosened the nuts, fixed the stock and staked them. How are my stake jobs? Tried to work some material into the castle nut slot. The one picture I took is of how it was from the factory, didnt snap a pic of the 2nd rifle but it was same way. Never staked any castle nuts before so just wanting to see how I did…tried to keep it clean. Thank you.
Your staking looks terrible. Colt and HK use a square tip punch head.

So I take it no one is actually torquing these castle nuts to 40ft ibs? That seems like an awful lot for that aluminum tube….also to add icing to the cake. Both of my handguards are not centered and my barrel is resting on the m203 hangers on both rifles. I called DD today to tell them about my issues and im honestly debating on sending both of these rifles back to them to have them professionally gone over. If im doing that im going to ask for a new castle nut/plate on both rifles and have it professionally staked. I dont have an AR vise block, my snap on torque wrenches are way too big to be torquing handguards and receiver parts…what a headache. Spent a premium to get a premium rifle. Mustve lucked out and got the new guy on the job..
Weren't they supposed to be "professionally" assembled when they were built?

Just wanted to give an update guys. Been so busy havent really been on here. Daniel defense sent me two brand new guns no bs and threw in mags, qd sling swivels. I know someone on here will still say “Thats the least they could do blah blah blah”, but at the end of the day this is what true customer service is. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone was extremely proactive about getting the issues squared away. Best customer service in the business IMO.

Congrats. Great outcome and great update. Not surprised, solid company and great rifles. Enjoy!

Colt and HK use basically a square punch head for manual staking. They probably have a fixture on their assembly line for production flow.
When i worked at colt we used a fixture in a hydraulic press set to a certain ft lb. Etc (not my place to say anythingnregardingnactual soecs, and that was years ago and could have changed anyways). That said, tests have been done and square or round stake has no effect on integrity or effectiveness. Dd isnt going to square punch it anyhow, they use annormal punch mark (last i saw, at least). Its entirely irrelevant to the build, and an asinine thing to obsess over. Stake it, and go shoot. Ironically, the only stake i ever had fail was an hk mr556. The end plate seemed to have a void which allowed the displaced metal to shear off.

Glad you got them back! This thread is useless without some after pics. We need to see the staking and receiver extension alignment!
Haha I will man soon as i get freed up! Trying to knock out all the house work while the suns shining. Building these rifles will be my reward when its all done😂

Ive seen Lamborghinis go back to the dealership for mechanical issues first day.
I know a guy that bought a 250k porsche. He had an issue and had to take it back to the dealer for something to be fixed. S
When your Billionaire friends got their cars back, did the dealerships throw in superchargers??
