Some friends and I went out shooting the other day and were testing out some new rifles. I had set up my gong to bong on with my new 243 after it was sighted in. My friend has a new 300 Win Mag and asked me if I wanted to shoot it after the sight-in. Said yup and swung over to my gong and presto, punch press.
Gong is 3/8" ap. Ammo was 180 gr. Herters and rifle is a Win Featherweight with a 22" barrel.
The splotches are from my 308 and 243.

Was the Herters steel core?
No, just a hunting round made probably by WInchester. I just read up on Herters since one of the three rounds I shot misfired. Herters is a house brand of Cabelas and several different companies load their ammo.
It's not always made by the same company for a giver caliber.
Anyway on the misfire, we noticed one of the rounds had a mangled primer so it was set aside, not to be used. Inadvertently it was handed to me as one of the tree rounds I was given. When I fired the shot, smoke came up out of the chamber area and the round didn't fire. I waited half and minute and ejected the round. The owner of the rifle sailed the round out into the desert. I told him Cabelas would probably like to be told of the misfire and see a photo of the round.

Steel core, or bi-metal jackets? I've seen the magnetic bi-metal, but I'd be really surprised if they were slipping the much more expensive steel core into blaster ammo.

I've had both. One just zipped right through some gongs like that. Why I asked
