Hey all.

Been thinking about springtime. I’d like to get back into shooting my 10/22 Target again and I was talking about it with my shooting buddy that has maybe a dozen target 22lr rifles.

I have a 10/22 Target model from about 15 years ago that I have a nice thumb hole stock and bipod on. I’ve put probably 10K through it but it’s been over 8 years since I’ve done any volume shooting with it. Mine has the heavy stainless steel barrel with the flat sections that kinda spiral around it the entire length. I hope you understand what I’m describing cause I don’t know any other way to describe it.

What I was thinking about is whether to sell or trade mine and get into something else, maybe a more accurate rifle. I also thought whether it would be better to upgrade it with some Volquartsen parts starting with the trigger.
Now I can’t afford a VUDOO…that’s way outta my budget. So I thought I’d put a stop on the price point of $1,000.

What I’d like to hear from you guys and gals is what sub $1,000 rifle do you believe is most accurate and fun to shoot from say 25 to 150 yards. I do all my shooting from a bench…..so no prone or standing off hand stuff.

OR…would I be just as good if I were to take my rifle and upgrade some of the parts with good aftermarket target stuff?

My rifle is a 10/22 but I don’t mind a bolt action. I’d like it to use higher capacity magazines though as I don’t want to be loading 5 or 10 round mags all the time. That’s not a requirement though…just a nice thing to have for me.

so….what do you think? If you had what I currently have and wanted to be competitive with your buddy that has a dozen great rifles to pick from, what would you do or what rifle would you pick?

The only one I’ve read even a little about is the series from CZ. I like the one that has the deep grip and short barrel. I think it’s around $700 or so. I haven’t looked into anything else.

thank you for your time ands by help you care to give.
have a good week guys and gals.

I forgot to add…

My buddy says his most accurate rifle is a Volquartsen his wife bought for him 10-12 years ago. I think he also has one of the bolt action Ruger rifles, a Remington he hasn’t done much testing on and about 8 or so 10/22 rifles with different aftermarket barrels, stocks, scopes, so forth.

He does NOT have a VUDOO or one of the CZ rifles….yet. He says he’s eyeing one of the CZ’s but he didn’t say which one.

I have also briefly looked at a BERGARA at my local shop. Seemed very nice.

thanks again.

Lacking info. Are you just wanting to outshoot your buddy on paper?

What groups is your buddy getting? What groups are you getting?

Have you tried different types of ammo to maximize the accuracy of your current rifle?

I'm no expert on .22lr rifles and potential accuracy, but it seems like more parameters need to be set.

Are we talking about 1 moa at 100yds? .5 moa at 100yds?

All day, everyday. Not only that, you can get a vortex strike eagle 4-24x50 scope for $279.99 (euro optics) and an Area 419 rail with a built-in level for $115. Cost of decent rings for under a $100. Finally, add say a CZ Varmint 457 At-One for about $700 (give or take a few bucks) and you have an absolute tack driver for a grand total of roughly $1200. Keep in mind that this model rifle has an adjustable stock and like other CZ rifles you can swap out the barrel for a 22 mag or a 17 HMR.

Roughly $1200 and you have a complete quality setup that will last you generations.

CZ 457, Savage B22, Anschutz, Tika T1x (The Anschutz is probably a no go BUT I HAVE found them used at 1K I passed and its one that I wish id gotten as ive never seen another of the same model under 1.4 or 1.5K that was on Rimfirecentral.com) You could also buy a Ruger 10/22 and send it in to get it accurized at a reputable place..That said Savageb22,Tika T1x and CZ 457 will probably outshoot the 10/22.

Bolt, Ruger and Bergara every bit as good as the CZ from what I've seen.

This was my answer. Kidd barrel on a TacSol receiver and match trigger in a PMACA chassis, Total War stock, Burris RT25 scope. I've shot it to 350 yards. At 100 yards, can usually cover a 10 shot group with a quarter. At 25 yards with SK ammo, I've shot 1/8" groups, 5 shots, several times indoors. Rifle itself is probably a bit over $1k if you paid retail for everything.

I shot a friend’s Tikka T1x with a cheaper model Vortex scope/ring set up, and was surprised at how accurate and smooth this rifle was. I don’t remember the particular model scope but it was a lower end Vortex. We were in the mountains shooting eggs placed from about 20 - 50 yards and trying to shoot them quickly from the prone. It was a fun and kind of silly contest but resulted in a lot laughter and smiles.

I 2nd these recommendations - I want to like a Ruger American Rimfire Target model also but the Tikka T1X or CZ457 target models will probably be more accurate .
