What are the differences between these two besides barrel/slide length.

Connector?
Extended slide lock lever?
What else?

I'm thinking about a home defense type pistol for my wife and looking for lower recoil.

This former thread/discussion may help in your final decision:

G17.5 vs G34.5 for home defense | Glock Talk

FWIW - I like the "balance" of the G17 gen 5 a little better for home defense.

The difference in the Glock advertised trigger pull (G17 gen 5 - 26 N vs G34 gen 5 - 24 N) can always be "adjusted" by connector change. Both are fine handguns.

  1. The G34 comes standard with adjustable sights.
  2. It has a noticeably lighter trigger pull that is considered factory stock and thus is GSSF legal for stock division. Is that what you mean by connector? (I term I don't know).
  3. It comes additional cool points
:)

This answers my question. But upon doing such an adjustment the trigger is no longer stock so if that matters to someone who is competing then that is still a difference.

I picked both of them up in a shop today and they both felt great. The G17 felt a little bit more "solid" for some reason, I don't know if the weight being a little more distributed in the G34 made it feel less dense.

this is a weapon for your wife? did she accompany you to the shop?

your perceptions and likes/dislikes are secondary to the potential operator of said home defense weapon aka, your wife.

what fits her and what she can shoot well is more important. let her find her weapon, set it up as she see fit and practice, practice, practice.

range time is preferable but a laser cartridge and LaserHit software (what I use, big help when transitioning to a RDS) is a good training option when range time isn't assessable, make it an after dinner, before evening TV competition a couple nights a week and see how both your proficiency's improve.

also don't discount a "22 trainer", if she isn't an avid shooter a 22 LR similar to her weapon will help get her past report and recoil before she works up to her home defense weapon, plus it cheep practice even with todays ammo prices.

Oh, and weapon mounted lights, not a big fan, can't get past pointing a weapon at anything to luminate it, that thing that goes bump in the night might be the cat, the dog, one of the kids, all a no-go for me.

check out the link below (or find a variation)

control of your light with out pointing your weapon at something you don't want to destroy in a high stress situation.
