My two friends got a call today and their permits will be ready to pick up in two more weeks. Their wait has been 26 weeks from when they turned the renewal paperwork in. This is a sad state of affairs.
Edit: The lady that does the permits said they are swamped with first time permit seekers.
I know that in California permits are handled at the county rather than state level but this still seems unbelievable for a state that is so top heavy with government bureaucracy. FWIW I recently renewed my Utah nonresident permit by mail. Had my renewal permit literally one week after I mailed in my renewal application. OTOH my Massachusetts nonresident renewal which normally takes about 60 days has been pushed back to 90-120 days presumably because of increased levels of first time permit seekers.

Although no permit is required here in Texas my last renewal I sent in online six months before mine expires which is the earliest allowed and received my renewal LTC in 12 days. That was online application and payment to my mailbox.
I recommend all Texans to renew six months before your LTC expires and other states check your laws because you may also be able to renew early.
Texas seems to have the renewal system down to a science.

I am not sure I understand. If no permit is required, why do they have a "permit" system? Does it depend on what you want to do, such as a license to carry?

The state of Texas sent me a notice well in advance of my permits expiration.
I filled out the form, paid the fee and they mailed me my new permit long before mine expired.
We are also a constituonal carry state, so even if there was a delay, you don't lose the ability to carry. God Bless Texas

We are a Constitutional Carry state now, and a permit is not required to carry. HOWEVER.... having an LTC gives you broader freedoms on specific places that you can carry versus places that no permits are banned from carry. The first that comes to mind is school zones. Under federal law, you can't be within 1000 feet of a school with a firearm, unless you are licensed to carry in the state that you are carrying. So if you have an LTC in Texas, you can carry on school property as long as you don't cross into the premises of the school (premises is defined as inside any building)... but if you're in the parking lot picking up or dropping off a kid, you're 100% legal, even under Federal law. There are other places that ban any kind of carry when it comes to non-licensed... so there's that.
If you're going to carry in TX... it's in your very best interest to be licensed.

It reminds me of the way Chicago used to issue gun permits. You had to register your weapons, but Chicago didn't process any of them (unless you were connected). It sounds like California is doing a rope-a-dope on permits (and is the last place in the US- tied with NYC) as to where I would want to live.

I have to say, things in Illinois have gotten easier recently, though a little confusing. My FOID card expires 14 months before my CCL, but the State Police are combining the dates under the same ID number. They also have a COVID extension. However, I'd like update my FOID card which technically expires in June, as that's the one I use at the range and have used to purchase firearms. What I don't know yet is if there will be a problem should I walk into a LGS, show my FOID that will shortly be expired and expect them to know of the changes that occurred at the beginning of the year?

Also, the State Police must have changed the entire FOID processing system. My daughter applied for a FOID last year and took 13 months to get it. My sister, who applied just before Christmas got hers in 3 weeks. Go figure.

There will soon be 23 states that have Constitutional Carry for all those (residents and non-residents) who can legally possess a firearm. North Dakota law says Constitutional Carry is ONLY aillowed if you are a state resident who can legally possess a firearm. Then there are the remaining states that don’t have Constitutional Carry laws on the books.

In states that share reciprocity with Texas, my LTC covers me if I were to carry in those states, no matter whether that state has Constitutional Carry or not. My in-laws live in Michigan, which shares reciprocity with Texas, but doesn’t have Constitutional Carry, so when we go for a visit, carrying concealed is no problem and perfectly legal, as long as I follow MI handgun laws.

Last time I renewed I left it kind of close to the expiration date. The guy at the renewal place told me they are running about 30 days to get renewals out, and informed me I could only open carry until my new permit arrived once my current one expired. But the state sends a notice out 90 days in advance, and the renewal is now all online from what I hear. I don’t need the permit but I’m debating if I’m going to renew it next time or not. Kept it current before to speed up gun purchases, now that’s no longer a thing.

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. (y)
