I want my first dedicated hunting rifle. I like Weatherby Vanguard and Bergara B14 Ridge rifles; similar features and similar cost. Which would you pick and why. And, feel free to mention any others.
Thanks

Are you referring to the cone bolt nose? The only other thing I’ve heard about Bergara is there is something unusual with the bolt. Any idea what that may be?
I don’t have a center fire CZ bolt action rifle but I am happy with the price versus quality of my CZ bolt action rim fire.CZ 557 American | CZ-USA
If you want a 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 or .30-06 I'd take a look at the CZ 557 American.
I would agree, Tikka would probably win in a poll. I think it’s mostly due to relatively less familiarity with Bergara though. I can tell you I have a lot of experience with Tikka, Bergara, Remington, Savage, Ruger, Weatherby Vanguard (Howa 1500)and lots of others. The Tikka T3x and Bergara B14 are similar quality and overall better than the others mentioned. I personally think the Bergara is the better rifle over the Tikka but it’s close and somewhat subjective. Honestly, Either the Bergara or the Tikka will be about as good a hunting rifle as you will ever need.I would be comparing Bergara and Tikka. Both great rifles. I think if you put a poll up Tikka would win out though.
The Spaniards finally made some decent guns, eh?I would agree, Tikka would probably win in a poll. I think it’s mostly due to relatively less familiarity with Bergara though. Sorry, the average 700 doesn’t hold a candle to a Bergara. If you want to buy new either the Vanguard or Bergara are fine. If it were me personally I’d scour the local stores for a used Model 70 or 700 in good condition. Those can often be found for excellent prices and are typically excellent rifles. Much better, in my opinion, than a Vanguard or Bergara. Plus, nothing says quintessential American bolt gun like a 70 or 700.
You should, 700 footprint but miles ahead of Remington as far as quality. The Spaniards finally made some decent guns, eh?
Now I’m going to have to get one for giggles.
Really? What about them feel like garbage? What hit or miss experience do you have with them? First hand or a friend of a friend internet story?Vanguard by far. They are super solid rifles for the $$ and very accurate. The Bergara’s are extremely hits or miss and the actions on their low/mid line rifles feel like garbage.
The Tikka T3X is another good entry level rifle to consider.
My experience was making the mistake of buying a B14 on a whim one day at Cabelas as a loaner rifle that turned out to be a POS. I’ve also got over a decade of experience shooting PRS matches since before it was cool and have seen plenty of people show up with them and experience problems.Really? Lol, Clanky action. Ok guy, I’m really glad you let me know you are a seasoned PRS shooter from way back but you are way off on the B14 action, but whatever, agree to disagree. My experience was making the mistake of buying a B14 on a whim one day at Cabelas as a loaner rifle that turned out to be a POS. If you manage to get a good one and can accept the clanky action that’s barely a step up from a Savage action, then I suppose it’s serviceable. They’re not what I’d ever recommend though and I’ve been doing the long range thing for nearly two decades.
Why was it a POS? What are the details? My experience was making the mistake of buying a B14 on a whim one day at Cabelas as a loaner rifle that turned out to be a POS. Are you kidding? The older 700s were the basis of some the most accurate bolt guns ever made. I realize the new ones aren’t what they used to be, but Pre-Sellout Remington 700s are outstanding.Sorry, the average 700 doesn’t hold a candle to a Bergara.
Barely shooting 3MOA with Berger and Federal Gold Medal factory match ammo was the start of it.Why was it a POS? What are the details?

agreed, the older 700s are plenty nice. Still think the Bergaras are a step upAre you kidding? The older 700s were the basis of some the most accurate bolt guns ever made. I realize the new ones aren’t what they used to be, but Pre-Sellout Remington 700s are outstanding.
You send it back to Bergara?Barely shooting 3MOA with Berger and Federal Gold Medal factory match ammo was the start of it.
