My decision was easy, my father gave me a new one in 1976.
All I’ve done is added a light and a 18.5” barrel and it’s perfect.
Throw the hunting barrel back on for wabbits in about a minute.
Action feels as though it’s riding on ball-bearings.
But if buying new today, It’d be a tough choice for most.
But between being the shotgun I grew up on, and having hundreds of hours on them for the DOC, ima 870 fan.

We're not talking about back in the day though we're talking about today and an insane amount of options as far as SD guns go. Remington makes a downgraded version to tinker with, modify and trick out in the Express version. It is just my opinion but taking a work of art like a Wingmaster with nice bluing and walnut stocks and turning it into a tactical shotty is a downgrade wrecking a work of art...
I guess it just depends on what you want. Some want the full on tactical look, with dull black finish and plastic stocks. Others like the blued steel and wood furniture look of an old school riot gun.

My choice came down to price. It's been about 10 years or so (maybe more, they run together now), when I found my Wingmaster at a pawn shop. A 1959 model with a 30" full choked barrel. It had been someone's field gun and showed some use. In decent shape for it's age, but no longer pristine or a work of art. At $125 though, it was a bargain. Cleaned it, ran some shells through it to insure it worked, and then chopped the barrel and added a fiber optic bead. An express back then was over $300 unless you caught a sale or rebate.

I love my 590A1. I picked it up last year in February and it was what was available and was right before things started getting weird. I prefer the location of the safety on the Mossberg over the 870, and mine not only came with a bayonet lug, it also came with a bayonet!

I bought it just to have for HD and for fun. I think we tend to overthink and overanalyze the "what-if's" and all the small details. and dare I'd say either a Mossberg or Remington in good working condition with an 18.5"-20" barrel would be equally awesome for an HD shotgun.

Here's my 590A1 in it's current state after swapping out the original stock. Also wears a Blue Force Vickers gear sling and a Brown Coat Tactical shot shell holder (they velcro on making it easy to just slap on a new one that's full of shells). It also came with a bayonet not pictured.

I got a Rem 870 Wingmaster 12 ga when I was just a kid for my birthday. It had the 30" full choke barrel, and I also got the 20" barrel with rifle sights. I hunted squirrels, rabbits, ducks, geese, quail, and deer with that gun for years and years, and I stacked them. It never failed me.

My brother has an 870 Express that’s been perfect.

There seems to be a lot of internet hooey going around lately about late model Remington shotguns that’s just plain bull shot. While there may have been some QC issues before the closure, don’t believe everything you read about them.

I equate this to the crap storm that circled a few years previous about Mini-14’s being junk.

They aren’t. They just don’t pretend that they’re AR-15’s, as some owners thought they should be. In a home defense or acreage rifle type role, they do quite well.

As previously stated, don’t buy into everything you see on the forums.

Owned a mini 14 for 20 years, and it ran like a champ. Never had any problems with it.
