Probably the last popper for awhile (yeah right
), but this is one of the few I've previously owned /sold that I wish I hadn't. So I got one back.
In the 1920 and 30s crime wasn't new, but what was were the abilities of criminals to flee in steel bodied vehicles. The age of The Motor Bandits. Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Nelson, and many more became MUCH harder to stop due to car bodies surrounding them during escape.
To counter this, Smith and Wesson used the 44 Military frame (later named N Frame) in 38 Special and with cartridge manufacturers increased the power of the .38 Special to a cartridge named the 38/44 Heavy Duty (or 38/44 High Speed, 38 Special Police, and others depending on cartridge company). A 158 grain lead alloy or full metal jacket, moving at 1150 fps. Tests at the time showed the ability to completely pass thru an auto body, from trunk to grill, and cow bodies in between .
I've always loved cops and robber guns, and so here is my new to me 1946 Heavy Duty Transitional in nickel. It's been refinished, but they did a great job imo, and since I wanted a shooter I couldnt care less. The pre war long action is such a smooth trigger sequence. Range report hopefully next weekend (with a couple of other cool ex cop blasters). Enjoy the gun porn and PLEASE if you have vintage ex LEO guns, throw up a pic or three.
