The 6.5 has some advantage beyond 1000 yards. I doubt you'll ever be able to take advantage of it. 308 also has more commonly available ammo. Down side to the Amaerican is magazine length restricts how far out you can seat a bullet.
Magazine length restriction is more critical with the .308 than with the 6.5C. The Creedmoor is based on the same case as the 260 Remington, the 7-08, the 243 and the 308 but the shoulder is set back so that the bullets can be seated further out.

And as far as commonly available ammo, If accuracy is what you're looking for, premium match ammo for the .308 is just as expensive if not more than the standard Hornady factory ammo which is very accurate and is reasonably priced.

I don't shoot long distance but I have found that cheap Federal Power Shock 180gr from WalMart shoots nice little groups at 100 yards out of my Ruger American 308. I have some match grade ammo around here I plan to try but if I was hunting the Federal 180s is what I would use.
I'm sure the 6.5 Creedmoor has some slight advantages over the 308 in certain areas but I don't think it's the wonder round that it was made out to be either. To me a 223 and a 308 covers anything that I would want the shoot at.

I went with the .308 in my American just because I figured it would be cheaper to shoot. Maybe not so much since I reload but definitely if one is buying factory ammo.
The 308 is a proven round, everyone from pig hunters to military snipers use it. If you can't hit it with a 308 I doubt a 6.5 will make any difference.
no knock at all on the 6.5, I know it’s a great round based on all the reviews.

but for the reasons listed above, I’d personally choose the .308

I bought these two, 30-06 and a 308, for my son and I years ago. His is the 30-06 and I shoot the 308. I almost got rid of the 308 this last fall for something more "refined" but then I remembered the 20+ mule deer I've gotten with it. The longest was a ranged 465 yds.

Too many good memories so I'm keeping it.

Have you shot a lot out past 400yds? Unless you get a lot of practice at long range I see no real advantage of the 6.5 over the 308. Even then, you're still going to have to hold over or, if you're lucky enough to have the time......click. We hunt near Sheridan in the ravines and meadows and while you can see them 600yds away there's an awful lot of wind from different directions between you and the deer. Along with your heart beating from humping up and down the hills it makes it very difficult to take those long shots.

I'll take the 308 in a heartbeat over the 6.5. Ammo's plentiful and cheap and generally heavier bullets. I've had very good luck with mine.

I really like my American in 223

How do he the two rifles
compare in recoil?

The 6.5 will launch projectiles with better sectional density and ballistic coefficient and will stay supersonic at longer ranges and will do so with less recoil. And if you reload, ammo is the same price.

And if you don't reload the Hornady factory ammo is that same price as 308 "Premium" ammo and the Hornady factory ammo is more accurate than cheaper, non-premium .308 ammo.
This....6.5 hands down if you didn’t have a 308. Your situation is a little different. Guess it just depends how big of a deal a new caliber would be.

I’ve had both the .308 and a 6.5 American. I found very little difference in the recoil between the two. I still have the .308 - as said before, heavier bullets, and increased availability of ammo weighed in.
Oh and FWIW I have a compact American in .223. What a fun little rifle!

Ok dudes I have decided I want another Ruger American bolt gun. The Ruger American standard I have in 223 is a tack driver. My dilemma is which caliber 308win or the 6.5 creed?
I know 6.5 is the latest and greatest and I would like to have one, but I already have a few hundred rounds of 308 for my Ruger Scout rifle. Will be using it as a range fun gun and also a whitetail/hog gun

I am looking at the Ruger American Predator model with Vortex scope combo
any ideas appreciated.....
For your hunting purposes and practical terms I’d go with the 308. There’s more options for ammunition.

It’s doubtful you’ll need to take a shot that a 6.5 Creedmoor will give an advantage over a 308 regarding realistic distances.

How many choices does one need? Here in good old Virginia I can usually buy 5-10 different loads for the CM at any given gun store.

Ive seen several people say this and I don’t think they’ve looked at 6.5 CM Ammo. Right now may be different as getting Ammo for any caliber can be a pain :D
