Hi, I am in need of some experienced advice. I will be acquiring my G17Gen5 in March, and I am looking forward to my next acquisition, but I am a little confused.

I like the idea of magazine interchangability, so I would like to obtain a Glock that I can use G17Gen5 magazines in. I like the idea of the G45, but virtually all of the videos that I have seen on YouTube intimate that the G17Gen5 magazines can't be used in the G45 because of the thickness of the G17Gen5 floorplate and the lack of the frontage relief on the G45. In looking at replacement may floorplates in the online Glock parts catalog, I can't find any differentiation.

Honestly, I am confused. Can G17Gen5 magazines be used in a stock G45 without modifications? Or do I purchase a G19Gen5 and wed the G19Gen5 slide to the G17Gen5 frame?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

The G19X will accept all generations of mags with a little minor gunsmithing. I used a dremel to radius out the front lip on the bottom of the grip and can now use any generation mag in the house. Not at all unsightly if done carefully.

Ronaldo, who says a Glock can always use a bit more perfection!

Yes

A 19 will compliment your 17 much for so than a G45

I'm an advocate of the G45, especially compared to the 17. IMO the 45 will do everything the 17 will, with the added advantage of being compatible with all my 19 holsters. The sight radius difference is negligible, and if you go with the MOS version, the added length of the 17 even becomes less of a deciding factor.

I am also LE and vertically challenged and the shorter barrel does have an advantage for me when seated, despite what the internet says.

All magazines that work in the 17 will work with the 45. The 19X is the odd man out, but only due to the tab and Gen5 baseplate designs. Use Gen4 and previous magazine base plates, and those mags work with the 19X as well. Or as others have said, remove the tab and it use any mags you want without changing baseplates.

With all that, I have gone back to a current production Gen5 19, no cutout and front serrations. I shoot it as well as my 45, and for me it just carries slightly better with my routine.

The G45, 19, or 17 will serve you well. The best thing to do is find a range that rents them, shoot them and get the one you like best.

In reality, the real world difference between the G45 and 19 is nothing more than grip length. Which grip fits your hand size best.

I have a G45. I bought it shortly after selling my G34. I didnt use the 34 because it poked or pinched me when I sat down. I also have several holsters for a glock 19 so rather than a 17 I chose the 45. I still carry the 19 the most but like having options.

I have both, the 45 and Gen 5 19. I carry a 17 and have for about 10 years now. The 45 is basically the same thing as a 17, just a minuscule 1/2" shorter, and I really dont see the point to it.

I have a number of 19's too, and never really got the point to them either. I carry a 17 just as easy as a 19, and the 17 has a more comfortable grip and couple of extra rounds in it, so why not? So, if it has to be between the 45 and 19, then Id go with the 45.

I buy almost all my accessories with the 17 in mind. Holsters work with all guns smaller in size, and in the case of the 26, actually, work better as a belt holster than the 26 specific holsters. Why buy a 19 holster, if the bottom is closed and you cant put a 17 in it? Its a lot easier to buy a 17 holster, and the others fit without issue as well. Just makes more sense to me.

I normally only buy 17 mags too, and thats what I use for a reload with any of them.

Okay, I’ll ask, for what? Will you be cc’ing them? Are they just for range use? Just to show people?
Honestly, I had a 17 and a 19 when I bought my 45. I then traded a 365 for a 27. I have since gotten rid of the 17 and 19, no need for them.
If it was me I’d shoot a 17 and a 45 before your 17 comes in. The 45 (IMO) is better than the 17 at everything. If you ended-up agreeing about the 45 you could just ask the gun shop if you could switch-out a 45 for the 17. If you do then there’s a good chance you’ll be happy with that decision. The 1/2” does make a difference when carrying, but not when shooting (again, IMO).
If you end-up getting the 17 you can see if you like carrying it or not. It’s usually too big for most people.
It’s that true too, then you can look at the 19. It’s shorter where it counts for cc’ing.
If I was in your shoes, and knew what I know, I’d try to talk the gun shop owner into letting you get a 45 instead of the 17, especially if you have plans to carry it.
Then I’d carry it for awhile. You’ll find out either:
1) it’s fine for cc’ing, holds plenary of rounds, and it shoots great. Or
2) you need something smaller. In which case I’d skip the 19 and go with the 26.
For me, the 19 is the perfect pistol, if I only had 1.
It’s not if you have a 26 and 17/45 combo.

You have a G17, so all other Glock pistols are lesser versions of the True OG King. Of course, just my opinion.

I have them all and rarely shoot anything but my well set up 17. It has the best balance and recoil management, for me.

Build a P80 if you want something in the Glockish family that will stand out. They are fantastic to shoot.

My shooting guns are for shooting.
Concealed carry guns for carrying.

Nothing on the market does both very well.

I try my best to always carry the guns I shoot best with. To do otherwise, makes no sense to me.

Concealing them generally isnt an issue, even for the full size guns. You figure out what works best for you, and you just do it.

My 17's actually do fit equally well in both roles too. :)
