Probably the same make as my production gun, which now is Tanfo. CZ would be the most popular, but I don't like CZ ergonomics. I guess Beretta is a serious consideration now too. But I would generally look to keep both applications on the same platform, if practical.

I don't have all that much experience with DA/SA carry guns, but when I was at the range the other day the guy shooting next to me let me run a magazine through his Beretta PX4 Compact. It felt really nice and shot really well for that limited amount of use. He had a red dot on it which threw me off, but otherwise a joy to shoot. Between that and his CZ P series pistol (I forget which one it was), I preferred how the Beretta shot and felt.

Hey all,

It turns out I am going to be making a move from Houston to Columbus soon. So now I'll have to buy new clothes and get used to wearing a coat again. On the plus side....it gives me an excuse to buy a new firearm for carry. Now that I can hide it under a coat, jacket, hoodie, or whatever, I think it gives me a whole lot more options.

My previous carry weapon is a G19, a Bersa Thunder and occasionally a Colt XSE Commander. I have 2 other pistols that could be used for carry that would fit my topic.....an FN Hi Power and a Beretta 92 Custom Carry (which is just a Compact Type L with a billboard on the slide.)

I'd like to ask you all and get some new ideas. I'd like to get a SA/DA type pistol for CCW. I don't really have any particular pistol in mind right now. There's some I would like to take a good look at like the CZ75 PCR or 75 P-01 and the Beretta PX4 Compact Carry.

I would appreciate getting some input from you guys and gals. You all know that you can never have too many firearms.

What pistol would you get to use as a carry piece that fit the criteria I listed?

Thank you for your time and help. Have a great week everyone.
Larry
From your choices, it seems like you prefer compacts instead of subcompacts. Otherwise I'd recommend the Colt Defender.

For DA/SA CCW I do like a bunch of SIG pistols. 225 (old and new), 239, 228, 229, 2022, 245, and probably some others I am missing.

The HK line of pistols is nice too. The Compact USP pistols, P2000, and P30 lines are nice too

Smith 3906, 3913, 4516, and 4566 are nice.

Beretta compacts are nice too. I don't know them all because I think their butts are a little fat except the single column ones. They do work though.

Depending on your build, the Commander can be carried in T shirt weather with proper holster AND belt. Milt Sparks VM-2, Summer Special 2, Criterion WITH Milt Sparks belt are examples. Other quality makers make something similar. I like the 1911 and the Hi-power, and they would likely be my choices in metal SA. Yeah, they are heavier than most, but I reiterate the importance of a quality holster and belt. Just use a slightly looser fitting t shirt.

In the SA/DA all metal, I also liked the now out of print Smith and Wesson 3913. I have fondled the Sig P series (though not fired one), and would give those a go, pending a good wringing out. Their reputation is good, and in 9mm I like the M11A1 or its single stack counterpart the 225? I think. While the 220 seems large, its overall dimensions are actually similar to the Commander except for thickness if you prefer .45. It was made in a carry version at one time, but I don't know if that is still the case. I have some limited experience in shooting the Beretta, and it is of course a great pistol, but I would likely prefer the Sigs for CCW. I like the hammer drop vs the traditional safety of the Beretta. Again, with these all metal guns, quality and design of holster and belt are paramount to comfort and concealment.

You asked about SA/DA and SA, and I like the above especially the Commander and Hi-Power, but honestly for CCW, I would stick with the G19 or G23.

What would I choose? I'd say...one of the many that I already own!

The above wasn't quite helpful was it(?!), and I apologize...and I'd really like to help. But it's you yourself who's the only one who can really make such a decision because we're all so different, and that decision requires your personal effort alone, to experience as much as you can to help make yourself as informed and as ultimately correct decision as possible :D

Let us know what you find!

I'd go with a Sig 229 probably in 357 Sig. Yes, I know there are better carry guns than that but that's a very good shooter in a caliber that means business.

With that said I'd say a nice 1911 in 45 cal unless you want to step up to a 10mm. Milt Sparks Criterion works great for my 1911. You said you already have a Hi Power and because I'm an old guy and I have a great fondness for them I would urge you to continue with it. Bad guys are proud to be shot with a nice 1911 or a Hi Power.

If you're not that high on continuing to carry the Hi Power please do yourself a huge favor and send the Hi Power to me!

Good luck in your search!

First, I would not be picking a SA or SA/DA for concealed carry.

But since that doesn't answer the question, if I had to I would pick a Browning Hi-Power. No other choice with a hammer comes close. I might even pick one in .40 S&W.

I have always been surprised that strikers have taken over for many for ccw. I still think DA/SA is a better idea for carrying IWB concealed. Less chance of “Glock Leg”.
Carrying a Glock type in an OWB or duty holster Is different as less chance of trigger snagging on a short or something.

I solved that by not pulling my trigger while the gun is pointed at my leg.

LTT thin grips make a big difference. Also, the 92X line should be a smaller grip yet, following the Vertec frame pattern.

I have a PX4 compact carry. Awesome pistol so it is my vote.

I wouldn't pick a DA/SA. Either DA only or striker fired and there are many SA pistols and striker fired pistols to choose from. For large guns there are the many 1911's and the DA only CZ75B.

And for smaller guns, the sig 938, the Kimber micro 9, and the Springfield 911 9mm. And for medium sized guns, the Colt Officer's lightweight in 45 ACP or the Defender in 9mm.

And for striker fired, there are many duty sized, "compact" (medium) sized, and sub-compact, both in single stack and double stack. I like 40 caliber, and the Smith and Wesson shield in 40 caliber is the same size as the 9mm and yet is controllable under rapid fire.

I'm partial to Glocks but I've shot one of the new Walther PPQ's that I liked as well as a G26 but I still prefer a single stack for concealed carry.

IMO, DA/SA is the best combo for CCW. The relative safety of a long and deliberate first pull like a DAO, no need to thumb a safety (just draw and shoot like a striker), ability to thumb hammer when holstering so you can feel if anything is caught in the trigger guard, all seem like desirable features to me. The trade-offs are often weight, the DA/SA mechanism tends to make the guns bulkier, and exposed hammers can snag. Oh, and they can be (a lot more) expensive. Depends on what is most important to you.

Whenever a Glock trigger snags on something, 99 times out of 100 it's somebody's finger inside the trigger guard when it shouldn't be there and wouldn't be there with the necessary training.

I love my PX-4 Compact .40 S&W

I've got the EL carry levers, low profile single side slide lock, larger magazine release, Trijicon HD sights, and a 14 lb. hammer spring.

The gun was reliable through 200 rounds with an 11 lb. hammer spring but that light spring turned it into a BTF machine.

I haven't heard of any of the 9 minimeter guys having a BTF problem with the 11 lb. spring though.

Regards,
Happyguy :)
