Considering a 30S or 30SF. If I understand correctly, the S has a smaller slide and the SF has a smaller frame. Are the grips the same size as the 30? Which model conceals better for IWB? Thanks in advance!

The G30S is a Gen3 G30SF (10+1) receiver (post June, 2012 version) topped with a slimmer, lighter slide and barrel originally designed for the G36 single stack 45ACP pistol. The slide of the G30S, designed for the smaller outside diameter of a G36 barrel (thinner walls), will not accommodate the factory barrel from a G30 or G30SF 45ACP pistol.

The G30SF (Short Frame) receiver of the G30S differs slightly from the standard Gen3 G30 receiver in that the trigger reach distance of the SF grip is shorter by ~2-3mm measured from back strap to trigger.

The width of the G30S slide (1.003" ± 0.002") is 1/8 inch less than the G30/30SF slide (1.126" ± 0.002"). However, the width of the G30S grip, measured at the wide point 1/4" below the mag release, is the same as all other G30 models (32.50 mm or 1.28"). Therefore, only a modest improvement in concealability should be expected.

The G30S weighs 3.5 oz. less than the G30 Gen4, which is 11% less overall with a full 10-rnd mag. Many will appreciate the improved comfort due to the reduced weight when conceal carrying the G30S pistol for long periods of time. The overall weight and height of the pistol (grip+mag) can be reduced even further for easier concealment with the optional, 9-rnd flush fit factory mag available for the pistol. For comparison, the height of the grip+mag of the G30S with 9-rnd mag is 0.6" less than the height of the G19 9mm pistol.

The rest of my evaluation comparing these two pistol models in greater detail can be found in the GT post here >>> The New Glock 30S - Pros and Cons

This concludes today’s lesson.

Very thorough information from he comments earlier. I bought a 30s a few years ago and have NEVER regretted the decision. It is my 1st choice for off duty year around.

The only suggestion I have is to peruse the GATE Self Defense forum for Mas’ insight on .45 ACP carry ammo.

I have had the 30s on my wishlist for a few years and plan on getting one someday. However the 30 gen4 will accept a 10mm conversion barrel and it to is on my list for that reason. Which is first remains to be seen. Either one you choose will certainly be a good choice.

The G30SF frame of the G30S uses most of the same internal parts of a Gen4 G30. It is the same externally as a Gen4 G30 without backstrap, without Gen4 grip texture, and without the larger Magazine Catch and its right-side installation option.

The G36 slide of the G30S is lightened and less bulky because it is designed for 45ACP. It is not just a minimally-modified 10mm slide like that of a G30SF. No Gen4 45ACP pistol uses a slide specifically designed in size and weight for 45ACP, except the G41. The caliber-optimized design of the slide makes the G36, G30S, and G41 Glock's most attractive 45ACP pistols, IMO.

Lets ALSO discuss the problems with the G30S too. Which can ALSO be found in this very forum.
Apparently there were problems with some of the SF frames whether it was a G30s or a G30SF.

If I got one of the problem guns I would send it back to Glock.

The G30s is about the biggest chunkiest Glock I would ever try to carry IWB. The regular G30 is like carrying a 2x4 inside the waistband. I think I would actually rather carry a G27 which is much smaller and less bulky and has similar ballistics if you compare 180 grain 40 to 185 grain 45.

I copied this picture from another post in this thread to show a size comparison between a G26 (Same size as a G27) and a G30s. And without the extended baseplate the G26 or G 27 would be much more concealable.

Here's a side by side including a G26 & G30S each with the flat based magazine.
That would be 9+1 for each when comparing G27 .40S&W and G30/SF/S .45 ACP.

i love shooting my G36, had a 30sf, didn't like the carry weight and bulk. but if you don't mind the bulk and weight the 30s is without a doubt, your best option. anyway i look at it, the 36/30 family is much more pleasant to shoot than my S&W stubby 38.

Ive had my 30s for 3 years now. Ive put 2500 rounds through it without one failure or stoppage of any kind. Ive also never had any BTF with it. I still carry it occasionally in a CrossBreed Supertuck. Personally I prefer the 26/27 to EDC.

I also have a gen4 30 that was made in 2014. I need to shoot it more than I do. Im almost embarrased to admit that it only has 200 rounds through it. It just sits in the safe. I traded my dad a 36 for it. He liked the smaller 36 better for carrying. The 30 and 30s are both great guns and I wouldnt hestitate to get another one if the urge ever arose.

As I’ve said in other threads; I’ve had (3) given (2) to Granddaughters and have retained (1). Have competed with the 30s out to 25 yards and can keep a 4” bull. The granddaughters 4” bull at 15 yards.

My retained 30s has some 2k rounds before I quite competing with this platform, which I’ve never had a problem.

Like I’ve also said before I was not aware others were having issues with their frames, apparently I’ve missed comment in the negative since 2013.

Hopefully those with issues will get positive resolutions.

Some of the 30S`s are runnin good, some aren`t. I`m not the only person (even in this forum) that has had nothing but trouble with the 30S. What i would like to know is, why hasn`t the 30S ever gone further than it has within glock, if its such a popular gun model. Why haven`t we ever seen it in a Gen4, let alone forget ever seeing it in a Gen5. My guess is, they know they have problems with the 30S, and wont ever bring it out in the Gen4 series... let it fade away if you will. But time will tell, and i`m tired of waiting for them to bring a new 30S out other than what they offer it in right now. Now don`t get me wrong here, i`m glad that those of you that claim yours is the holy grail, never a hiccup, awesome, i`m happy for you. I myself will likely walk away from the 30S platform and not look back until glock has one that isn`t a red headed stepchild full of problems.

Have you contacted Glock about your problems?I’m sure they would fix whatever issues you’re having.
