New shooter in the family doesn’t feel comfortable without a manual safety. Any and all recommendations for a G17 size pistol in 9mm with a manual safety would be appreciated.
A somewhat heavy trigger may also be beneficial.
Thanks.

RUGER AMERICAN COMPACT PURCHASED 17+1, manual thumb safety, trigger safety similar to Glock, ran about 175 rounds perfectly. Thanks.

Hum G17 sized would be a M&P full size
Sig P320-m17 design
I know theres more just can't think of them at this moment .

I have a 40sw 4.25 early production m&p , not a 5" but there available . Good carry size but all could use a few apex trigger group parts to make better . 1.0 need a striker block and trigger while the 2.0 may be fine for you or a trigger only ! .

How about a decocker ?? Sig P2022 looks like a classic sig da sa but is a polymer lower ? Heavy first pull but nice SA after that .

Now I really stretching a bit but there area few 1911 or double stack 2011 models with polymer lowers !!

Not a polymer frame and more like G19 size, but try a CZ P01. Soft shooting, DA/SA so heavy first trigger pull if they want it and a safety (can easily swap for a decocker if you like).

Only 3oz heavier than a g17. Hammer fired, but really may be what your family member would like. Ergos of the grip are excellent.

Ruger's SR series are reliable, soft shooters with good ergonomics. They have the manual (thumb) safety as well as trigger safety (Glock style). I have a SR9C and a SR40C, no issues with either.

The Smith & Wesson M&P line are all available either with or without a manual thumb safety, so be aware of that when you're looking. They have a trigger safety, too. The M&Ps come in various sizes. I guess the full size would be the comparable one to the Glock 17. They are striker-fired pistols as are the Glocks, and they have a good reputation for reliability. The 2.0 versions have an improved trigger and different grip texture.

M&Ps (the thumb safety versions) and Glocks are the only two brands of semi-autos I own, so I don't have much experience with other brands. My daughter and her husband have Springfield XDs, if I recall correctly, which have a grip safety. I like my M&Ps better, but that might just be personal preference.

Lots of choices out there!

Don't forget the H&K USP.

It meets your requirements of a safety and heavy first trigger pull.

It's not striker (don't know what's up with that requirement) so he would have to remember to decock, but since the safety and decocker are integrated that shouldn't be a problem.

Happyguy :)

Thanks for taking the time to share. Researching online as suggestions came through. Looks to me like the Rivers have a very similar setup to Glock regarding trigger safety. Additionally they have manual safety. Someone above mentioned the SR models. Any thoughts or experiences with the America line?

I like the Ruger SR9c a lot - good ergonomics and it also has a pretty obvious chambered round indicator which is something else new shooters seem to like. Magazine disconnect is really easy to remove.

When I started looking for my first handgun I was only sure about one thing -

I wanted one with a manual safety --

The reason I wanted one is because I though that having a safety would be safer.

I did a lot of research and discovered I didn't want a manual safety -

What will they use the safety for?

If I am hunting pheasants - I want a safety on my shotgun - so I am not anti-safety in all forms.

My CZ75B has a safety (one of my favorite guns) - I guess if I was going to carry it with the hammer cocked I would want to use the safety. When at the range if I have to stop shooting my CZ and the hammer is back I will flip the safety on.

So maybe guns with a hammer need a safety - well unless they are a revolver.

Is this person planning on carrying cocked and locked?

I would say a S&W M&P or Ruger SR series or even the Sig M17

The M&P's are nice but some folks don't like the trigger's. I actually like the M&P with a Apex trigger. She needs nothing else in my opinion. Well the 1st Gens could use a good stippling or Talon grip tape.

The Ruger has a very nice trigger on it. Seems to be a tough dang pistol also. My buddy has a SR40c and is one of the softest shooting .40's I have ever shot.

The Sig M17 is the only one I have not shot yet outta the 3 but it looks to be a fine built pistol.

Good luck.
