Test Gun: Delta Elite
Barrel length: 5 inches.
Ammunition: Speer 10mm 200gr Gold Dot.
Test media: 10% Clear Ballistics Gel.
Distance: 10 feet.
Chronograph: Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph G2.
Five shot velocity average: 1028fps
Gel Temperature 77 degrees.

I finally picked up a box of this ammo when Target Sports had it in stock when I ordered a bunch of 9mm ammo. I got a five-shot average of 1028fps with a high of 1040 and a low 1014fps.

Round one in the bare gel had a velocity of 1042fps and penetrated to 16 inches. Recovered weight was 199.3 grains and expansion was .65 inches. Round two also penetrated to 16 inches. Recovered diameter was .66 inches and weight was 199.1 grains. Velocity was 1032fps.

In the heavy clothed gel, the first round's velocity was 1014fps and it penetrated to 18.25 inches. Recovered weight was 199.8 grains and its expansion was .65 inches. The final round penetrated to 17.5 inches and had a recovered weight of 199.6 grains and an expansion of .66 inches. The chronograph did not get a velocity reading.

That is 40 cal ballistics. The recovered rounds look good though!
Sort of. You have to push 40 pretty hard to get 1000fps with 200gr, but it is normal watered down, factory 10mm ammo.

Thx 5pins for the data. You always show groups size but I dont see distance?? Yes it matters.

I'd pull them and repack at 1300 fps. Not for a Delta Elite, of course.

Spot on! That a hot 40 with 200 gr but, really watered down 10mm.

For me 10mm is about 200gr bullets running hard, but I would be fine with the 200gr gdhp load if I carried a g20, which I tend not to for edc.

Can anyone name even one handgun round offered by Speer that could honestly be called hot? I think not.

If it was 165gr I'd agree. But this is a 200gr bullet.

No this is not a full 10mm load. It doesn't have to be.
No, it doesn't HAVE to be, but it SHOULD be. That said the 200 grain Gold dot bullet was most likely designed for the velocities that Speer intended it to be loaded to. That's why Underwood uses a Hornady XTP in their 1250 fps 200 grain JHP load and they use a BONDED Gold dot for their 1200 fps 180 grain load.

I think the reason so many 10 mm loads are under powered is that I suspect that the manufacturers re not loading the 10mm to the ‎37,500 psi max pressure level. Instead they are probably loading it the same pressure level as the 40 S&W but because of the larger case they can burn more powder and get a little move velocity than the 40.

Maximum pressure for the 40 S&W is the same as the 9mm, 35,000 psi.
I'd actually like to see Federal create a full power 10mm load using a 180 grain HST JHP specifically designed to expand at 1250 fps. Sig loads a 180 v-crown JHP to this velocity and Underwood loads a 180 grain Gold dot to 1300 fps, but the V-crown isn't as good of a bullet as the HST and is only sold in 20 round boxes.

If Federal can sell 230 grain HST 45 ACP loads in 50 round boxes for a reasonable price, why can't they do the same for the 10mm? and since the 45 ACP load is available in standard pressure AND Plus+P, why couldn't they offer a full power 10mm load in both 180 and 200 grains?

I consider the full power 200 grain 10mm the best load for hunting and a full power 180 grain load to be the best load for defensive use against feral humanoid recidivistic predators.

I think ATK made that bullet for 40. At least one good sized agency was using 200 gr. 40 because there is a Speer Lawman loading in 40 and has been for a decade or so. It's still listed and I found it for sale a few years ago. It was hard to find. Maybe the agency changed caliber or load and they decided to use the bullets leftover in 10mm to see how they sold? I bought five 20 round boxes of this and the bullets are very close to their non SB 180 GD in looks and construction but the HP cavity is slightly different so they didn't just throw 20 grains on the ass of their 180. The 180 was my least favorite GD in 40 because it consistently clogged when I was testing bullets of all kinds in different medium. The fact these look good after thick clothing is great to see.

Yep, 200gns @ or near 1000-1100fps is a '.40-level' 10mm load, ... also known as 'junk ' 10mm ammo, suitable for plinking at best.

Said 'junk' 10mm ammo is marketed by unscrupulous vendors seeking to separate 10mm fans/users from their precious ammo-$$$.

A legit 200gn 10mm load should be doing a minimum of 1200fps MV, typically as vetted from a 5" barrel, and better still if does that from the 4.6" factory barrel of a Glock 20.

Don't settle for watered-down .40-crapola ammo masquerading as '10mm' ammo, 'cause it ain't. All you're getting for your $$$ is downloaded performance from a more expensive case. :whistling: You know you're better than that. o_O

For real 10mm factory ammo, go with BB, DT, or UW.
