I don't understand his wild popularity in the gun community. Well, actually I do, but more on that later...

First off, there is nothing wrong with his videos. He seems like a genuine, honest, fairly knowledgeable guy that is pretty good at practical shooting. In fact, there is a whole lot to like about his videos.

He has a pleasant demeanor and talks about the guns in a calm, rational, and appealing way. He doesn't wear costumes like a lot of other gun reviewers. No goofy cowboy outfits or tactical ninja attire. Just comfortable Carharts, jeans and flannel.

He gives an honest and very general review about the firearm, shoots a bunch of free ammo, blows up pop bottles and makes plates ring.

Every. Single. Time.

And that's the only issue I have with his reviews; every gun is the same and performs the same and he likes them all the same. Pretty much.

Now, I haven't seen every single one of his videos. But I did watch quite a few when trying to choose a pocket carry pistol and then a GSSF match gun.

He offers very few technical details. He will say general comments about a trigger feeling good or having a good reset, but I have never seen him actually do a trigger pull test to produce actual numbers.

Now, the latest video review of the Sig P365 was probably the best one I've seen of his. He compared the pistol directly to the Shield, G26, G43, and PM9. He used actual calipers to compare dimensions and gave specific differences in weights (though oddly enough, did not specifically say the magazine capacity of the Shield; only the other pistols).

But in that review he did not list trigger pull between all of the guns; focusing instead on size and weight.

And absolutely no mention of accuracy, other than it is good for a pocket gun.

And about accuracy...

He will never ever shoot for group size. In fact, in his video explaining his thoughts on accuracy in handguns, he mocks those of us who do care about minor differences in pistol accuracy. If you could call it "mocking". The guy is a real gentleman. I would rephrase it at "dismissing" those of us who bench shoot handguns.

The video mentioned...

I watched his video on accuracy and I can't disagree with him on his main point that in using a handgun for it's main purpose of self-defense, accuracy has very little to do with it and most modern pistols designed for that purpose are all accurate enough.

But he also said something in that video that kinda' makes my point. He said that everyone shoots every gun differently and that some people will be more accurate with one gun than with another and that they are all just fine for self-defense.

Then why watch his videos? If no one knows if a gun is a good fit for them without shooting it first, then why watch a guy shoot one well and blow up a bunch of pop bottles and make plates ring without going into the technical and engineering and accuracy details about each gun?

If I'm trying to decide on a new truck gun and have it narrowed down to a G19, CZ P10C, VP9C, Creed, and the dozens of other pistols in it's class, what are Hickok45's videos going to offer me to help decide on which one?

He likes all of them and shoots all of them well. So it will come down to the details in trigger pull, weight, capacity, ergonomics, and inherit accuracy; things he typically either glosses over or doesn't mention.

I know why he's popular; he's a super nice guy that gives an honest opinion and does it in an entertaining and everyman kind of way. I just don't find his videos particularly helpful in actually choosing a pistol.

And yes, I know there those who worship him here and will flame me hard and make comments like, "if you think you can do better, then make your own videos..."

Really? Don't be a simpleton. I'm not attacking him, just having a conversation about what I'd like to see in his reviews. I'm sure some day there will be someone who comes along and does detailed extensive testing of each firearm with an appealing demeanor and calm, rational way of getting their point across like Hickok45.

He can’t help that he’s a good shot. He just can’t shoot a gun badly haha

I like his videos because of his honest, no frills needed approach to the guns. I’ve seen him shoot enough to be able to see how a gun handles (differences in muzzle flip, quick follow up shots, etc). And he goes into the history on a lot of the guns, especially the colt and smith revolvers he reviews.

I guess I watch his videos more to learn about the gun, the history, the new changes to it. If I want a full, in depth review of measurements, groupings with different ammo, etc. I will go to another channel. But Hickok will make sure you learn about the gun and how it works, and that interests me more than how some guy who gets thousands of free rounds can shoot it accurately. Because I’m not fortunate enough to have that much shooting practice.

His criticism is subtle but if you watch him very much it is easy to pick up on. His shooting with almost every gun shows that the gun is capable of better accuracy than I and most shooters can take advantage of. His preference on trigger pulls does not put as much weight on the weight of the pull as much as creep, crisp and where it breaks. I can usually tell how much I will like a firearm by his review.

I enjoy his videos. They’re helpful for me when I’m shopping for a new one.

His shooting abilities are very good. I like the variety of targets and distances that he shoots.

Overall he shows that he is having a good time doing what he does. He has a great personality and he’s pretty straightforward. He covers the overall practical nature of the tested items.

I am in the process of setting up my own range at home. I don’t know how extensive I’ll have equipment sit in the elements, as we get all four seasons here. It was set up for archery initially.

I just received my waterproof tarp to Cover my Dueling Tree and Texas Star (not pictured).

I use a UTV to haul my stuff.

In what way are they helpful to you? What do you learn about the gun you're interested in that you can't find out from the company's website?

Not being antagonistic; I genuinely want to know what knowledge you gain on a specific firearm by watching his video.

Hickok has a lot of experience with firearms, forms legitimate opinions based on that experience, and communicates them in a very friendly, low-key way. Zero self-importance like Nutn. I'm cool with that.

Its Sooch00 that I grew weary of. Though he is a swell guy, he describes everything as "excellent" and doesn't give any more info than the average guy would give. So I gave up on Sooch.

I like his videos, he shoots the firearm that he is showing us at the time and then he puts it on the table to be examined and taken apart. My LGS is terrible at stocking firearms so I never get to handle them ( live in small town not connected to the road system ). I haven't found a more reliable source on the internet but I do like MAC a lot also.

OK, I have to confess: tl;dr. But, yes, I agree with your first few paragraphs.

The videos are too long for my preferences.

The first few I watched were interesting to see. But now the 60%+ time spent shooting = "seen one, seen them all".

Some of the camera work is good, so I will jump through the bench scenes in his videos just to see a given pistol up close or from different angles.

But I would rather watch him all day long than watch one "comparison" video from someone's basement where the guy on camera sloppily attempts to hold two similar guns side by side in mid-air, clearly doing a poor job of keeping slides/grips/whatever even and then pronounces, "See, they're basically the same size!" Everyone watching can see they really aren't, but no one can tell how much difference there is because the goofball in the video won't set the two guns down long enough to let us see for ourselves.

(Did I mention that's a pet peeve of mine?)

I like Hickok for all the reasons you mentioned. I like him because he doesn’t push a brand or particular firearm on the viewer. He has something good to say about everything. I also agree that his videos are a tad redundant and low on technical info, but that’s his style and you know what you’re getting with him.

Hickok is a good watch, but not one that I'd go to for a real review of a gun. He rarely finds anything wrong or doesn't get too critical. He has a great personality and has fun with his videos. Most take it too seriously and get too tactical mall ninja. After he is done reviewing the guns he sends them to be auctioned and I was pretty surprised at how much over MSRP some of them go for. I guess people want a piece of Hickok in their collection.

Most don't care for Nutnfancy, but I like his videos quite a bit more. He gives me everything I wanted in a review and isn't afraid to be honest if a gun isn't great. Sure he goes on and on and on, but I enjoy the listen.

Sooch, is ok, but loves everything too much.

I watch one of his videos every once in a while. He has all the positive characteristics you mention. I happen to agree with him about accuracy. I've never found a handgun that wasn't "combat accurate". Of the scores of handguns I've owned, and hundreds I've shot, they were almost universally capable of one hole at 21'. That is all the accuracy I need and keeps me on steel out to 50 yards without issue. People who bench Glocks or similar handguns and try to work up precision loads for them confuse me. A hunting revolver or bullseye gun is worth that effort, but it's pretty wasted on a combat gun.

Keep in mind that he's trying to help Buds sell as many guns as possible.

I don’t have a problem with that. He’s upfront about who sponsors him. It’s not any different than any other reviewer (cars, clothing, gear, tools, etc). They’re all pushing something, getting kick-backs, free stuff, paid travel, etc.

No mention of accuracy? either you can hit the target or you can't. Group size is irrelevant.

One of his videos was of a Glock 20 shooting 220 grain underwoods. He had a hard time hitting the targets with the stock barrel and switched to an aftermarket barrel and then he could hit the targets.

One of the most accurate guns I've ever fired was a JM Marlin 41 magnum. I was shooting at a steel concrete form stake that was 2 inches wide at a measured 90 yards and I hit the stake 5 times out of 7. That might have translated to a sub-2 inch group with a couple of flyers and that was shooting offhand standing up!

That was DAMN good accuracy. Group size? irrelevant.
