I think it is a mistake to judge what most people do with their Glock (or any other possession) by reading and listening to what enthusiasts do. My bet would be that the large majority of Glocks sold are never modified. We even have a sizable number of folks here who keep their Glocks stock or nearly so. The rest is customization, not usually because of need, but because of desire, or the urge to tinker, or whatever. The point made earlier that part of the popularity of Glocks is because they are easy to work on deserves reiteration.

why are all the mods necessary?
They aren't.

Boys love their toys. And when we really love them, and are churning with testosterone, we cannot help but d*ck with them. Its really just an excuse to play with the gun between range trips. Playing with our toys is also a distraction from the reality that we will never be an NFL quarterback or play spank spank with Kate Upton. Our toys are anesthesia for a weary soul because they distract us, and modding our toys adds to the distraction.

I see this happen not only with guns, but with cars (chrome wheel, lowered, etc), knives (lanyards, replacement clips and screws), Maxpedition Man Sacks (all those stupid velcro patches and dumb paracord bracelets), and on and on. Our guns and cars and knives and bags don't need to be d*cked with, but we just can't help ourselves.

I have pretty much gotten over the whole mod scene at age 55, but the younger lads have no control over this stuff.

I get a little hyperbolic when it comes to user mods and aftermarket parts for Glock pistols. In fact, not that it matters to anyone but me, I have no fundamental reservations when such parts and mods are made to pistols for range use only...until such cause problems serious enough to make the pistol unsafe to the user and people nearby. (Like pistols that have multiple and other unplanned discharges, or the recent case of a Glock chock-a-block full of aftermarket "improvements" that discharged when it was dropped.)

But Glocks that are intended for serious weapons duty, including self-defense, are without exception better for self defense duty with only Glock OEM parts in the firing mechanism. Many newbie users install expensive advertiser-hype aftermarket junk in the fire control mechanism of their new SD/HD Glock (often the only center-fire handgun they have ever owned) under the impression, apparently, that the criterion for success in a self defense shooting is the same as for a range session shooting. That bogus "3.5 connector", light firing pin, spring sets, XYZ -brand trigger bar and assembly, and titanium RSA "just gotta" score higher when the post-shooting point tally on the bad guy is all added up by the DA...I guess...assuming the transmogrified abomination that once was a reliable weapon fires and feeds at all, or does NOT inadvertently fire and put its user in the local DA's sights. :)
just to comment, i think there is one thing you should add and that is how much shooting one shoots. ask a typical weekend warrior how many rounds he has fired thru that gadget gismo with all the aftermarket parts vs the guy who budgets ammo every month for competition perpurposes. im sure there are guys replacing springs quite often due to the fact that they shoot thousands of rounds on a regular basis. for those guys, maybe they have found aftermarket parts work better as a replacement part. for the guys who shoot 100 rounds a month, well now it's a hobby. For me, i shoot about 300-600 rounds a month, i have a trigger kit and stock everything else. A friend of mine shoots a 12 year old glock that has over ten thousand rounds thru it. If you were to dry fire our guns side by side, they feel exactly the same. It's a chance he takes not replacing old springs that are worn out. It's a chance i take using aftermarket springs.

As far as self defense goes, in my opinion, anything goes. the chances of something bad happening are slim for most sheeple. If things do go south i doubt it's going to be a trigger spring that costs you your life.

X2 yup

You drive what you can afford or shoot what you can afford. My nutty kid bought a brand new 2015 Subaru WRX, dropped a custom engine and 2013 WRXSti tranny in and other stuff just so it would be a one of kind Frankenstein crap your pants fast car.
You mod stuff because it fun or different. No real reason, it is just because you can.

No mods necessary WHATSOEVER . . Trust me.

However, if you run over it with a steam roller, you might be in the market for a new Sig.
if I had that SIG I would modify it so it looked like this:

If the Glock is such a great pistol, why are all the mods necessary?

I get getting additional barrels in different calibers to save money by shooting cheaper or to keep from having to buy another gun in the same size frame in that caliber. I change the sights to I can see the targets better and so all my guns have similar sights.

But some of the mods others are making seems to indicate the only good part of the gun is the frame and everything else needs to be changed out.
The mods aren't necessary. Mods are done for a number of reasons. Most of which would hurt some feelings if I listed them here. All of my Glocks have been flawless out of the box. The plastic sights are all that I expect them to be. The only mods I've done to any of my Glocks and only to the ones that are carried was the addition of night sights and even those are Glock branded, except for the Ameriglos on my wife's 42 and my 43.

All these choices that Glock owners have is amazing, should you have the itch to modify your Glock. Look at all the neat Ruger 10-22 custom parts available for that rifle, amazing. Make it yours and mod it up, or not.

Mine, I change the sights and add grip tape. I'm happy.

It's not the size of the gun in the gunfight; it's the size of the fight in the gunfighter. The typical owner does not understand that. If something is good to go, better has to be "add-ons".

I've had several 1911s. Only thing I did was put sights on one. Scared to do much else.
I hated the stock fat trigger on my Sig P6 so I found a short trigger for that (extremely hard item to find), then new Wolff springs. It's not an easy thing to do on a Sig.
After a couple of stock Glocks, I got a new Gen 4 19 last year. Didn't like the trigger so I put in a flat one, I love it. And springs, and extended slide lock makes it easier to take down. The difference is, it is so easy to do those things on a Glock, but is hard as hell on most any other gun. And any part you want to replace or change, springs, barrel, trigger, is a couple of dollars away, and totally drop in. And you can find parts everywhere. So why not?

I'm going out to the camp with my Dad this weekend. If somehow he runs over my Sig with his trackhoe, I will probably go into a panic . . . then pick it up, and when I pull the trigger, IT WILL PROBABLY NOT GO BANG. At that moment, I will wish to GOD that I had bought a Glock . . .

I guess to each his/her own. I buy it and keep it like it is. If I did not like the way it looked when I bought it, I would not buy it.
