All the USP 9/40 mags I have seen/owned have had a metal liner in the magazine.

I bought a new USP Compact in 1998. It came with metal magazines, no plastic lining. The mag spring is metal. The follower and baseplate are plastic.

When did HK start lining their polymer mags with metal? I just bought a new one with metal lining and it was my understanding they didn't have it.
They always have.

USP compacts are metal magazines, USP (full size) 9mm and .40 are polymer.

Wow. I did not know that. Learn something new everyday.

Looking at the prices for HK magazines, I assumed they were all made of good Krupp steel, not plastic.
Their metal magazines are super rugged, some of the nicer magazines to be had. Their polymer mags were not as good, in my limited experience. The USP .40 we had at the rental counter in the local range needed replacement more frequent than any other magazine of a rental.

I believe there was a recent modification or addition. I was told also by HK that the new full sized steel mags are compatible with and without the jet funnel.
Yes. My newer USP 9mm Expert came with a jet funnel and three of the newer black metal lined polymer mags. Have a thick metal floor plate as well. Heavier than the older style clear/opaque jet funnel mags. I have two of those. Prefer the new style.

I bought a USP .40 back in '94-95 right after it came out. The only metal in the mag was the mag spring. That was my #1 complaint, the mags felt cheap as hell. Not sure when they started adding the metal liner. I think it was many years ago though.

Disclaimer: don't own one. Just researched this recently though. Considering USP vs P30, and other DA/SA options. Anyway, what I've read is:

USP compacts: metal body mags.

USP45 fullsize: metal body mags.

USP9 and USP40 fullsize: polymer body mags, but metal lined since ??? Also, I have seen it said in a youtube video that the metal lining is not full top to bottom. The reviewer said that about 2/3 of the mag from the top down is metal lined, but the bottom 1/3 only polymer. I don't know if this is accurate. Would be interesting if someone could post some photos of a USP9/40 mag dissection and settle this.

No camera handy, but I bought a USP9T about six months ago and the 15-rounders that came with it are metal lined for about the top third, down to where the "7 6" round holes are.
