This is listed for sale locally. Have thought about picking up a classic 92S or M9 if I can find one at a good value. This one seems a bit steep compared to what I've seen on Gunbroker.com, but am not sure as I am not that experienced with some of these older firearms. Thoughts?

Drew, I don't think $595 is all that bad for a mint example in the box.

The police trade-ins are rough. They also have the black plastic grips and hideously ugly import stamps. If you're going to get an older Beretta, get a nice one. If not, what's the point?

Here's one of my originals. Its a Beretta 92 from the late 1970's. Its in near mint condition with the box.

This is a beautiful Beretta and at a fair price. It has everything a Beretta buyer would want. I would love to have it in my collection of Berettas. If I was living in Texas, had the money, and was able to meet FTF, I would jump on it. It is a beautiful Italian Beretta. If you have the money and can meet the seller FTF, do it.

If I recall correctly, I believe the model in your photo, Bac, is the original design that Taurus more or less clones to this day, isn't it?
Sort of. The Taurus PT92 still has the safety on the frame like the original 92, but the trigger guard is squared off and the mag release is behind the trigger guard. The old Berettas had the mag release on the heel of the grip, in European fashion.

Furthermore, the original, very first Beretta 92 design that went into production is actually pictured below. It differs from my 1978 model in that it has an extra "step" mid way down the slide. Beretta manufactured a little over 50,000 of the standard 92, but only the first 5000 of those had the original slide. Also, since we're going back 40 years, many of those 5000 probably aren't around any longer, so finding them is not easy these days.

The original 92 grips were just these drab checkered plastic grips with no logo. Later, the smooth wood grips on my 1978 model came about.

I dig those older Berettas, especially in that condition with the original boxes. Like bac said, the PD guns have been used hard. Personally I'd drop $595 on the example you inquired about. The early rounded trigger-guard, mag release, wood grips- I think that's really slick.
