I felt the plastic they use on the Walther is a higher grade and it did not help that H&K would not answer the question about the polymer used on the VP9. They just kept avoiding the question. All I could eventually get was that it is not the same as their other models. The things that took the VP9 down below the PPQ build quality wise for me was that rattling and very thin slide lock lever on the weak side and the way they designed the take down piece. I also feel the plastic "ass wings" on the gun is a horrible idea. It did not make the gun easier for me to rack...it just made it less comfortable.

In the end, they rate very similar on a performance and build scale. I just felt the VP9 should be better but isn't.
To me the polymer that the Walther uses seems about the same as the VP9, but its all a matter of opinion. The Walther also incorporates cheap plastic sights and guide rod as standard equipment.

I don't get any rattling with mine. If anything, my PPQ rattles more.

The PPQ's stock sights suck...but for not much more than the price difference between the two guns (the PPQ is about $50 cheaper around here) you can upgrade to the night sights. The way the rear sights switches out is awesome. All sights should change that way. Those glow paint sights on the VP9 would need to go anyway in my opinion so both guns require a sight change.

I actually don't mind the stock sights on either of them. I was just commenting on the material used.

I think we're honestly splitting hairs here. Both guns are very close, as I mentioned in the review.

I went into the review comparing the HK solely to the Walther and not other HKs, so maybe that's why our opinion differs a bit. I certainly see nothing in the PPQ that would suggest it being a higher quality pistol.

No, you're right...they are pretty much the same level gun...but some of the features of the VP9 I just don't like. Especially those wings they decided to test market but didn't want to test on their higher end guns.

Thanks for a great review. I am thinking about buying a PPQ and it's good to see comparisons. Still going to go with the walther but like you say why not own both! That's the best advice I have heard in a gun review ever!

I was unsure regarding the wings, but I actually like them. As pointed out, they can be easily removed, if you don't like them. I wondered if I would want to yank mine off prior to using it, but now, I would like to see other vendors include them as options (they may be patented, etc., but they don't cause any problems, and do help with grip).

I wouldn't think they are patented. Had them on my air gun as a kid. :embarassed:

Oh, the memories. The legendary 1010 Marksman..... They did not make you into a Marksman. But, I might still have one.

I like the charging supports too. They're unobtrusive and don't hinder any manipulation of the firearm.

I think this idea is catching on, Springfield's Mod.2 the revised XD sub compact has milled a similar feature into the rear slide serrations. The deep cut gives a solid purchase while racking the slide just like the VP9. (photo from SA web page)

I like the new look of the XD. if only they didn't write "GRIP ZONE" up the side of the grip.

Too bad SA didn't anticipate the negative reaction that seems to diminish the very nice improvements they intended to promote. I like mine and swept the zone under a rubber carpet.

I wonder if there might be a version lacking the toyish billboard on the grip in the near future?
