Ballistic numbers don't interest me. How the ammo works on the streets is what I care about.

The 9mm 115JHP +P+ has proven itself for decades before the .357Sig was ever introduced. If people like heavier recoil and less rounds then the .357Sig is for them. Otherwise the 9mm 115+P+ is the way to go.

.357 SIG is to 9mm what 9mm is to .380.
People love 9mm so they will always defend it to no end. I love the 9mm but it's no .357sig just like .40 isn't a 10mm.
All loadings being equal (no cherry picking underwood 9mm vs Remington .357sig) it's simply more powerful.

357sig is about 175fps faster than 9mm.
10mm Is about 175fps faster than .40
It's all about case capacity

Love and carry the 357 sig in a G31, but dont agree with the analogy.

I would not feel bad at all if I had to carry the 9 mm loads instead of my favored 357 sig, but it would really suck if I had to carry a 380 instead of a 9 mm.

Quite to the contrary, 9mm +P+ is not even recognized by SAAMI and, therefore, has no pressure standard. Why shoot unregulated ammo, when it's easy to just step up to 357Sig?

Actually, to me it's a mute point, because I'm perfectly fine with 9mm+P. I just think its funny that people feel the need to shoot ammo with no specs. It seems a bit silly to me. To each their own, I guess.

The 9mm 115JHP +P+ (9BPLE) has been around since the early 80's. It was first loaded by Federal for the Illinois State Police. Later Winchester was given the contract to provide them with the 115JHP+P+ (Q4174). At the time this ammo was for law enforcement only. The R&D people at Federal and Winchester are not morons; they are not going to design a load that produces dangerous over pressures or ammo that's going to destroy the handguns that will be firing this ammo.

The Big Four (Federal, Winchester, Remington and Speer) have been making 9mm +P+ loads for decades and these manufacturers know what they are doing. And the 115JHP +P+ loads by the above manufacturers have a proven street performance that rivals the performance of the 357Mag 125JHP.

Quick comparison from my pistols and chrono, average of 5 shots:

Glock 19:
Ranger T 124 gr. +P @ 1,212 fps / 405# KE
Ranger T 127 gr. +P+ @ 1,238 fps / 433# KE

Glock 32:
Gold Dot 125 @ 1,344 fps / 501# KE
Federal HST 125 @ 1,358 fps / 512# KE

Those are the hottest loads I've got for either.
Hottest vs hottest, the 357 Sig produced 15 - 19% more KE
Some people don't think it (357 Sig) is worth it, but I am not one of those people.
An extra 15 -19% more power may make a difference and having 500# of KE is comforting.

I know it's been around. I don't care. I'm merely saying that there's no pressure standard for it.

I prefer to shoot service rounds with SAAMI standards. That's all.

locosteelersfan,

Opinion on ballistics... folks here have done a fine job of that, but I'm curious as to what you are going to do with such a round. Most folks I know that shoot or have shot such rounds, don't shoot much of them. They value their wrists and other arm/shoulder joints far too much!

If it is just for fun at the range, go for it, if you intend to carry this type of ammo, well IMHO you may want to re-think this. I think Merkavaboy may have hit the nail on the head here "...Ballistic numbers don't interest me. How the ammo works on the streets is what I care about."

Home/self protection gun(s) & ammo are all about what you can control and put on target shot after shot. NOT about getting the biggest cannon in your hand that you can.

But like I said earlier it just depends on what you want to do with it?

For what it's worth... it's just my thoughts.

Good luck and be safe out there

Yeah I think the +P+ designation is a non issue if the load is from a reputable and proven manufacturer, I have no problem with it. The ranger T 127 is a great performer.

Can you just imagine the crap that Elmer Keith, Dick Casull, Roy Weatherby, Gaston
Glock and so many other inventors had to hear?

I feel real bad for the guys that first used black powder.

Yea, these companies have know idea what they are doing,

I'm personally not overly worried about the 9mm +P+ being an issue. However, I just don't see a need for it. I'd rather shoot the 357Sig round if I feel the need for more velocity than 9mm+P. To be honest, I fine with 9mm+P anyway.

I feel the same way about other loads outside of SAAMI standards, such as 44mag+P or 40S&W+P. There are other cartridges for this kind of performance.
