So I've got an 870 that I want to set up with a rifled slug barrel for deer season this year. I've done the lead rifled slugs with it and don't really like the short range/lack of accuracy. I usually hunt with a revolver or the muzzleloader.

The question is, if I get the barrel with sights, is it possible to change them over to ghost rings? I'm also looking at going with a cantilever barrel with the scope mount and using a red dot type optic. What do you all like in the red dots that are less expensive?

As a deer hunter here in Illinois I've got 2 slug guns, a 12 and a 20. Open sights of any kind just don't work with my 55yr. old eyes anymore. Both of my slug guns wear Nikon Pro Staff 2x7 scopes. The sight picture is just so much better. I also hunt with handgun and muzzleloader. My .44 revolver wears a 2x Leupold, my mz has a Cabela's Powderhorn 3x9. I know red dots have gotten a lot better than the early years but a slug gun really dishes out a lot of punishment. Good Luck!

I've never hunted with a shotgun, but I do have tons of experience on the police range. I never had a bit of trouble hitting a man-size sihouette COM at 100 yards with an 870P and the stock open sights using a decent rifled slug at full power.

I have a Ithica Deerslayer 12 gauge with a rifle barrel and rifle sights it is very accurate at 100 yards but if I did it all over again I would probably go with a cantilever barrel And a red dot

This has been my experience as well.
870 Wingmaster
20" imp.cyl. barrel w/rifle sights
Hogue's plastic stock.

Wincheter, Remington or Federal 1oz. slugs all give me 4-6"

Skip the crappy Remintgon factory sights and go with the cantilever rifled barrel. Find some sabots it likes and a decent red dot and you should be taking deer at 150+ yards no problem.
^^^This!

I won a Remington 870 Slug gun w/ fully rifled barrel and cantilever scope mount a couple of years ago, in a Fire Dept. raffle.

I put a Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32mm scope on it, using Warne rings.

With Winchester "Partition Gold" sabot rounds, it will group 3 shots touching at 100 yards, and opens just slightly at 125 yards.

My son has taken 3 deer with this set-up.
He shot a great 7 pt (left browtine broke, otherwise it would have been a beautiful 8 pt!)
125-135 yards.

For an 'inexpensive' red dot, the Bushnell red/green dot works well, and stands up to 12 ga recoil.

Do yourself a favor and get a magnified scope instead of the non-magnified red dot. The red or green dot will cover the whole target at 75+ yards.

Also look specifically for a shotgun scope or at least one with a long eye relief so it doesn't hit your eyebrow during recoil.

I've had good results deer hunting with a simmons pro diamond 4x32 shotgun scope

I agree with getting a scope. On my rifled barrel slug gun, I use a Tasco World Class 1.5-4.5x 32mm.

In the dark woods, you might want to see what is going on, maybe such as counting antler tines. Some magnification helps for that.

If on a drive, you want very low magnification.

Thus my chosen range from 1.5 to 4.5. Also I'm sure 2-7 would work too.

I have a red dot on my Contender handgun. I like scopes better on a shouldered gun.

This above although I don't drive hunt myself.

I have an Ithaca Deerslayer in 12 ga. I chose the 20" rifled bbl for tight, thick locations and unfortunately put cheap glass on it ( a Simmons ).. I went 3X9 for no other reason than to make out a 1" tine at distance ( Pa needs 3 points up disregarding the brow tine in my county). I went through a range of slugs, first rifled, then sabots.

I use Rem copper solids and will till they run out (I have 7 or 8 boxes left). I shoot two shot groups to sight in.
This target is lightfields and copper solids about 4 years ago.

This one was just 2 years ago. Both targets were at 100.

I didn't need the slug gun last year with 2 crossbow deer and a rifle deer.

My first record of using it was in 1988. I scoped it the following season with the cheap Simmons not knowing if recoil would bust up a scope. That Simmons is still on there.

Thanks guys. Mostly I've been hunting with a revolver but I performed poorly with it last year and had to pass on several deer that were just too far. The lead slugs seem to drop too much especially when making a downhill shot, plus I've only got one bead on the barrel, so I thought I'd go for something better. It's turning out to be hard to come up with a slug barrel, they're backordered everywhere. I like the idea of the red dot but I've not used one, not opposed to a scope either (but I tend to struggle with setting them up right or using them right not sure which).

You should be able to find a bbl for it but you might consider just putting a scope on the pistol or check : Brownells, Cabelas, Amazon, ebay, midway, cheaper than dirt,Remington or even Mossberg Remington slug bbls.

There should be something out there that you can use. Either smoothbore or rifled.

Good luck

get a cantilever slug barrel. I live in ohio where we have to use shotguns. with the new sabot slugs that are out, a good shooting rifled barrel will shoot 3" groups at 100 yards some even better than that. make "sure" you get a scope made for a shotgun, as recoil will be brutal. I have a 1x4 powered scope on my 1187. when walking its always on 1x for the fast close up shots. if you prefer a red dot, I"ve had good luck with millet. don" buy cheap scopes, as shotguns are very hard on optics.

I was in the same boat as you. 870 w/ smooth bore using lead rifles slugs. Accuracy was horrible. Cabelas runs sales frequently on Mossberg rifled slug barrels that fits the Remington 870 with a scope as a package that you can pick up for $199. Not the greatest scope but it works. 1.5" -2" groups at 100 yards is what I get out of it. Took a beautiful 10 pointer last November with it.

Cabelas has them in stock

I was where you are..considering a rifled DSM for my 1187 SP..some guys on another forum suggested that I first look at 20 ga ballistics and an H&R UltraSlug. I did and bought, topped with a Nikon SlugHunter-3-9X.

It shoots Winchester Partition Gold 260gr sabots @2000 fps like a rifle from the bench. 2-3" at 100 yards. I tried everything then available and Partition Gold shot best. Remington Buckhammer a non-premium slug with attached plastic wad shot fairly well - don't see it advertised now. Was disappointed in the Hornady rifled slugs - like the company and their product but those did not perform well in my slug gun.

Just put a fresh battery in my Lyman Trigger Pull gauge so didn't have to rely on memory - 2# 9oz. Story there is that at that time IF your trigger pull was =>6# H&R would adjust for free- I just missed that as they adjusted for $25 including shipping both ways.

I just looked in Cabelas and DSM rifled barrel for my 11-87SP is $334.99 and back ordered.

What got me initially moving toward the 20 ga slug gun was ballistics first, good field reports from hunters and the fact that the cost of a DSM barrel and a shotgun scope was getting high dollar. I probably did not save much if any money but like what I have.

Best.

At the risk of hijacking this thread; I don't know much about slug guns (there's something out there besides Fosters??). Sounds like they are capable of ''30'30'' kind of accuracy. The sabots, loaded with projectiles with decent ballistic coefficients must really reach out there.

Curious, how does a rifled slug gun barrel remain a shotgun? Great idea, just can't figure out how it was pulled off.

Anyway, that .50 caliber sabot round doing 2,000 fps has got to be good for anything on our continent and perhaps a bit ''over exuberant'' for our little N/E whitetails.

Max range? 200 yards on a good day?
