"italian9x21" tells us that in Italy, this is the caliber civilians must use because military & LE have the 9x19 sewed up.

For those of us who want a stronger 9mm, can a 9x21 barrel be had for a Glock 17/19/26 or a 40-9 conversion for that matter?

This part is probably better addressed in Caliber Corner, but is 9x21 actually any more powerful than 9x19?

Since .380= 9x17, my guess would be that the 9x21 > 9x19.

Anybody KNOW?

IIRC, civilians cannot use military calibers in a lot of European countries. Supposedly, Glock made like THREE 9x21 Glocks for NCIS agents undercover in a country over there. Like having one of THREE unique guns would not blow your cover. At least that is what I read in Sweeney's Glock book, from Gun Digest......

I lived in Italy for four years while in the Army in the early 80's. I purchased a Bernardelli P19 chambered in 9X21. Not trying to get this locked or moved, just establishing some base of knowledge. 9X19 is considered a NATO round and the Italians have banned private citizens from owning NATO calibers. The Italian gun makers came up with the solution of creating the 9X21 caliber. The cartridge is 2 centimeters longer but the bullet is seated 2 centimeters deeper. It uses the same amount of propellant and the overall length of the round is exactly the same. It doesn't result in a more powerful round, just an odd size to comply with Italian law. Until the past few years, it was next to impossible to get 9X21 ammunition at a fairly reasonable price here in the states. I purchased the gun and got a one way permit to transport it from the dealer to the Provost Marshall's office where it was locked up until I got orders back to the states. They then did the paperwork for customs and ATF clearance to import the gun and shipped it. I didn't see or touch it from the time I gave it to the PM until I arrived at my next duty station.

It is my understanding that 9x21 is now obsolete as 9x19 is now legal for Italian citizens. It is also my understanding that 9x21 pretty much duplicated 9x19 ballistics as the OAL length of 9x21 and 9x19 are the same within 0.002". The case is 2mm longer, but the bullet is seated almost 2mm deeper in the case, creating the same volume for powder. This allows the same magazines to be used and stops 9x19 from functioning as the shorter 9x19 round would be almost 2mm from the 9x21 breech face.

If you want a hotter 9mm round, take a look at the 9x23 Winchester. It will launch a 124-grain bullet at 1450 fps. I do not believe it will fit into a Glock 9mm gun as it was designed to function in the 1911-pattern pistol.

The 9x21mm (often called the 9x21 IMI) is not obsolete in European countries and there are a lot of companies making this ammo. It's just not a popular caliber here in the States like it is in Europe, especially in Italy.

Even better than 9x23 winchester is 9x25 dillon! Which lonewolf makes conversion barrels that fit into the 20 and 29...

1) If you look in Wikipedia for 9x19 NATO and 9x21 IMI you'll the pressure specs are the same.

2) You'll also see that IMI stands for Israel Military Industries , the inventors of the 9x21 IMI cartridge.

3) 9x21 is not obsolete. Chicappa just late last year began chambering their Rhino revolvers in 9,21.

4) IGB of Austria sells 9x21 conversion barrels for several Glock models including the G26, G19, G17, G34 and G17L, and you can get them from MDW guns:

Because the 9x23 Winchester is not limited to 124/125-grain bullets; I like to load 147-grains at 1400 fps, which is right in the middle of real .357 Mag territory. Because 9x23 Winchester brass is a LOT stronger than .357 SIG and there is no need to worry about case support. Because when my 9x23 was built, there was no .357 SIG.
Farscott,
Why bother. Just get a 357Sig and call it good.

ADK 40GLKr thanks for citation,
commercial 9x21 (IMI) load has the same ballistic performance of 9x19 Luger.
The 9x21 is absolutely no obsolete and is the most current caliber for SD.
We can CCW in semiautos 40S&W, 357 Sig, 45 GAP,45 ACP and 10 mm Auto but not 9x19.
All U.S.A. (S&W, Kimber, Ruger, Springfield) and European (Glock, Sig, Walther) firearms industries export in Italy their hundguns in 9 luger in 9x21.
Here even arabian Caracal is offerd in 9x21.
Another particular for LEOs, Army and civilian no hollow point or expanding bullet are allowed for SD or HD we can use only FMJ bullet.
Regards
