In the context of various plausible emergency scenarios in which a handgun might be needed, who would rather have a 33rd mag over a spare 17rd mag? Do you guys consider the 33s as mostly for range / game use, or do you think they should be held in high regard as an emergency spare?

Side questions: Does anyone keep a 33rd mag in their HD gun? Does anyone carry a 33rder as a spare (on- or off-body, and under any circumstance)?

Thanks.

Had three or four zombies out in the back yard just two nights ago, killed some chikkens.

I would have been SOL with 17 round mags.

Or.....why not have two or three loaded up, "just cause"?

They're inexpensive, and need no justification whatsoever?

(what the heck is a "plausible emergency scenario"??.....LA riots? Hurricane Louise?)

I think "plausible emergency scenarios" only exist in the non-free states.

The rest of me realizes that potential emergencies are a reality.

From the perspective of an owner of a 45ACP Glock used for CCW and HD, I don't view the ultra high-cap mags as a tactical advantage for routine carry or HD, but I consider them very desirable as a last-resort stash of ready-to-use ammo for a worst case situation.

I do not view them as an advantage in a HD situation when clearing a house for intruders. In fact, the long mag protruding from the pistol can be a liability in a hand-to-hand struggle if surprised by a bad guy. It's a convenient handle that the bad guy can grab and apply leverage to control your pistol.

I much prefer a smaller spare mag for CCW and HD (carry a 13-rd 45ACP spare for CCW and grab a 17-rd spare for HD). However, we always stash several loaded 30-rd mags around the home and in each of our vehicles for use only as a last resort. My girlfriend owns the same model Glock. When we are together we can backup each other with ammo in any mag we have between the two of us in an emergency.

The ultra high-cap mags are very practical for routine use at the range. We gather them up and reload everything with FMJ before making a trip to the range. More time shooting and less time reloading on the range is a great convenience and much better use of our training time.

If you routinely drive in places where you believe you need multiple 33 round mags in your vehicle to be safe, may I make a suggestion that you MOVE. Find a safer place to live for you and your family. War zones aren't great places to raise kids.

Dave, can I borrow your crystal ball?

How in the world would I ever "know" that I'd "need" a 33 round magazine in any given day?

Would my 5 shot revolver suffice today?

Should I take the G38, or the G20, with two spare mags today?

I'd certainly ALWAYS rather have too much, than too little.

If as a legally armed civilian you discharge a 17 round mag and 2 - 33 rounds mage in an encounter with anybody. You better have one heckofa reason unless you want to have your right to bear arms removed and spend a lot of time in the pokey. You are responsible for each of those rounds when they leave the barrel of your weapon and any and all harm they may do. All of this may play out well in the movies but not in real life.

They're cheap and fun. What more reason do you need?

If I was so inclined, I'd have them on the G21 on the boat, in case a sub full of Soviet commandoes attempted to steal the shrimp in my boat's livewell. It could happen.....

i went to my local police supply shop while getting stuff for the academy, they had "blemished 33rnd 9mm mags and 22rnd .40 cal mags on sale for $15 each, so i now have 20 9mm happy sticks and 15 40 cal happy sticks, WHY? JUST CUZ
