I was out shooting with my son this past weekend and about once every clip the slide wouldn't fully return to battery, it would stop about a 1/4"short. It only happened to him and I would use the same gun.

Any ideas why this might happen?

All things being equal, same gun, same magazine, same ammunition, and if, as you say, it doesn't happen when you shoot then my first suspicion is 'limp wristing'.

It only happened with your son, not you? How old/big/experienced is he?
Where in the mag did it happen?
Was he holding it correctly and was it clean?

he is 13 and not much exp with handguns, just rifle.

Never same place in the mag, sometimes on second shot others towards last.

Was clean, I am leaning towards limp wristing it also as he had a couple FTE but I dind't know if this was also an effect.

yea, tell him to hold it firmly. I'm 99% sure that's it if it's just him.

It's pretty hard to imagine limp wristing causes FTRB. If the gun is not filthy and the recoil assembly is not worn out, you should not be able to do this:

1. Point the unloaded gun straight up or up at 45 degrees.
2. Pull the Trigger.
3. Pull back the slide and try to ease forward all the way, as slowly as possible and let go without it going into battery.
