Have some money burning a hole in my pocket and want another shotgun.

Considering:

Maverick 88 ~ $200
Moss 500 ~ $300
Mos 590a1 ~ $500 (loaded up)

My heart lusts for the 590a1 (this one specifically), but my head tells me it isn't worth 2.5 times the cost of the Maverick for home defense use and blasting in the back yard.

Also considered the "Blackwater" edition, which is the same price.

Can anyone offer some guidance to help me decide to go high, low or middle cost?

I have the standard 590 with the same stock, plus heat shield and bead sight. I love mine, and there's nothing wrong with a standard 500. Not sure about the Mavericks, though. For the money, I'd go with a 500 to keep the budget down.

The 590a1 is nice, there is more pride of ownership involved with it. I would personally get the 18.5 inch barrel, shorter LOP stock, GRS, 2 shot magazine extension.

The Maverick or the 500 will get the job done as well, and be lighter.

I'm kind of set on getting a Mossberg product, though the 870 has a great reputation.

Of the three models you mention, I'd go with the 590A1, mostly because it's easier to clean (and change the spring & follower) the inside of the magazine tube. Remember, when you buy the best you only cry once.

I have an 870 for skeet I'm in the same boat about getting another 870 or Mav 88 for HD...

If there's an Academy Sports and Outdoor you should check them out they are selling the 870 HD for $269 with an additional $30 man. rebate... an 870 for $239 aint bad...

You really need to consider this:

#1 They ALL will work for the intended job (assuming HD)
#2 There is NO DENYING the superiority of the 590 construction
#3 The 88 is an excellent balance of ergos/controls - sort of the best of both worlds 500 vs 870
#4 The 500 is a great compromise in price performance between 590 and 88 - almost as strong as the 590 (which is close to indestructible) yet nearly as cheap as the 88

At the end of the it will be 2.5x for an indestructible combat proven gun, vs a gun that won't hold up being dragged through the mountains of Afghanistan, but will work perfectly for a corner of the bedroom and 15 rounds every few months. Or - there is the down the middle option if you are a price/perfamnce ratio kind of person and dig the Mossberg features.

For the record, i have a 500 7+1 Persuader with adjustable stock.

All are great shotguns if you ask me. I have the Maverick 88 but it doesn't stop me from wanting a 590.

The 500 and Maverick are practically the same gun, though the 88 only comes with polymer stock, has a polymer trigger guard, a crossbolt safety, and a harder to change forearm.

The 500 mainly has the advantage of a removable forearm, and/or wood furniture. They both use the same interchangeable barrels and stocks. The 500 uses a tang safety, so it mostly just boils down to personal preference between 500 and 88. I chose 88 myself based on a preference for crossbolt safety.

Fair warning that both kick like a donkey and a half.

The 590 by comparison is a bit more sturdy in construction using less polymer, a steel receiver instead of aluminum, and a heavier barrel. It trades off ease of barrel replacement in favor of a mag tube that accepts extensions. The heavier components help in taming a bit of the recoil of its little brothers.

I also wouldn't be too quick to rule out the 535 if you like magnum loads, and just hate your shoulder.

The whole 500 series shares the same basic receiver design that makes them such excellent and reliable guns, so whichever you pick you'll be happy with.

The Mossberg 590 and 590a1 has an Aluminum reciever just like all the other Mossbergs.

From a guy who owned all 3 mentioned. The 590A1 is built like a tank with everything pretty much thicker and more parts made of steel or aluminum per uncle sams request. When ammo runs out thicker gauge steel makes for a great blunt instrument/mele weapon. Is it needed? Nah but its cool and some times that is worth it.

How would you rate the smoothness of the action going from a Mav88 to a 590?

I know the 590 is made of higher-spec components, but for home defense rather than military use, does that translate into better quality of function?

Is parkerizing a lot (or a little) better than blued steel for rust issues?

i have two model 500s and love them both one is the JIC Combo which comes with the pistol grip and short barrel which you can change out to the provided standard syn stock and long barrel. I also have the Sluggy combo which came with long barrel and a rifled slug barrel w/scope. each only costed $350 OTD so basically 4 set ups for $700 not bad in my eyes

Where is there available a 2 shot mag extension for a 590A1 with a 18.5" barrel except from a guy on the Internet with the handle MAX100 whose reputation is questionable?

Am in the market myself for a Mossberg 590A1 but can't decide whether to get the #51517-7 (18.5") or #51663 (20"). Are 3 more rounds worth the extra $48 not to mention the increased weight?

Choate makes a 2shot extension. I went with the Vang +1 on my 18" 590A1's.

True, but according to this post, the +2 is longer than the 18.5" barrel which some find undesirable. Choate does make a +1
but as with the Vang +1, the additional cost is more than simply buying a #51663 (20") in the first place.
