I'd like to put a vertical grip and a flashlight on my rifle. Is there a kind of rail system I can install without changing out of damaging the original hand guards? I've seen thing which might work but most products are gears towards later AR15 models. I'm no .223 rifle expert. Thanks.

What brand of rifle do you have?

If you want to preserve the original A1 handguards, why not buy a complete
upper assembly with the specifications you want?

That way you'd in essence have 2 rifles and could switch back and forth.

JBnTX: I have a Colt M16A1. No longer full auto. I think a new upper what probably cost more then I want to spend w/o just buying a whole new gun.

Can you elaborate on exactly what type rifle you have?

I've always understood that, "once a machinegun, always a machinegun"?
I've always been told this is the ATF policy too?
Bought a retired parts kit, maybe, and built on a new SA receiver? I think Cheaper Than Dirt was selling the full parts kits for a while. They were sans receiver, and I believe they came with SA FCG.

Should drop in with no changes to the rifle. They even mount up tight and are not heavy. It is also what the Marines are using on their A4 rifles (so I have been told) if that floats your boat.

Here is a link to 'seconds' from the manufacturer. I didn't see any problems with the set I ordered. I have heard the T markings may be swapped left to right on some. I didn't have that. $150 compared to $350.

JBnTX: I have a Vietnam era Colt original M16A1. It was altered to no longer switch to full auto. Other then that it only has minor changes (ambi-safety and a more comfy pistol grip).

Otact and Tunafisherman thanks for the links i will check them out.

Magpul is making their MOE handguards in rifle length so you can swap it out for $30 and add the MOE vertical grip and a short rail section for your light. It's cheap and light and easy.
I was hoping to not ditch the triangle hand guards but this is probably the best solution for the money. Thanks.
