Q: What movie did John Wayne star in That he said don't say sorry it shows a sign of weakness?

A: Never apologize, mister, it's a sign of weakness was a quote from the movie She Wore a Yellow Ribbon 1949 featuring John Wayne.

My ears are burning with apologies from those that made dastardly personal attacks against me.

What a useful, informative, 1911 related thread we have here...

down here, when i was growing up, you apologized for being in someone elses way. learned that right off. that or you got your jaws popped when you got home.:shakehead:

Apologies might also have been less often necessary back in the days when you could speak more that two sentences without offending somebody.
But before that, there was another standard:

"An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life".

The first part of the Mordan Claude quote is an Internet Standard. Fewer cite the rest.

Those are words from a script that were directerd toward someone that knew the words were coming and nothing serious was meant by them. The phrase is also more applicable when you have been ordered, or are compelled to follow direction or regulations, and have to command others and they perceive a certain order (or orders) to be unfavorable. At that time, you would not apologize for you actions because it could be seen as a sign of weekness in your ability to command. They have to understand that whether they like it or not, they too have to do things they may disagree with.

The situation in the other post is totally different. A man is offering his heart felt aplology for wronging some individuals unintentionally. In his case, to apologize is a sign of true strength and defining character. This man made mistakes in a time of weekness and despair in his life and now he is asking for forgiveness for his wrongdoing that he may start fresh and with a new outlook. Not too many men would do that these days. My hat is off to him and he has earned my respect.
