I was at a local gunshop yesterday when an older guy walked in to put a safe queen on consignment. He opened the case and it was a 95 -98% condition Colt Combat Commander series 70, made in 1971. It was not a lightweight model. The colt comes with 5 magazines. Unfortunately there was no box, just the pistol and mags. He wanted to clear $875 so it was put on consignment for $1,000. Is this a good price, something I should jump on? Probably wouldn't make any sense as I could apply the $1000 toward a higher end 1911. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I'd pay $1,000 if I really wanted it and it was a good pistol (no cosmetic flaws). I'm not a lover of gun boxes, so it wouldn't bother me if the cardboard and styrofoam box was gone. Are the mags any good? If they're factory Colts or something you want, good, if not, tell 'em you don't want 'em. I'm not a collector, so it would get shot and the box would be trashed anyway. Not sure what you want it for.

Whether your a collector or not, throwing a box away for an old Colt is like trashing at least $100, sometimes a good deal more.

Smith & Wesson 1911PD and Gunsite models are running about $800 to $900 used. Another $100 for a Colt I'll go do it. Any I bought it I'd have a Novak put sight and beaver tail on it and have them do an action job.
Personally I think you can get a better gun for $1000.00, but it is a Colt.
They hold a good resale value and the early series 70 commanders are hard to find.
If you really wanted THAT gun then I would say get it.
I would think a S.A. Loaded or something along those lines would be money better spent on a working gun.

Bottom price for an original, no rust, pre-80 Series (there are no 70 Series CCs) Combat Commander is about $600. A nice one can be had for $800 or so--check gunbroker.com. A pristine, NIB, unfired, etc example might bring $1K from a buyer looking for a safe queen. $1K for a 90% example is pretty stiff--you can do better, but if you gotta have it......go for it.

You can definately get a better gun for $1000, but old Colts just have something about them. If its 95+%, it dosen't sound like a terrible price, it would be better if they had the box though. As Bac said, someone threw away at least $100 when they got rid of the box.:whistling: If you've been looking for an old Colt, it sounds like a decent one to have. It all comes down to how much YOU want it. :supergrin:

All good points. If I would have had the cash on me I would have offered him $800, but didn't, so based on everyones comments I'm going to pass. It's a nice vintage colt but I can do more with spending $1000 on another 1911. Thanks

If I had the money available, I would be all over that pistol. You just do not come across one like that everyday. To each his own though.
You should come to some of the Dallas/Ft. Worth gun shows sometime. Colts of all eras are quite plentiful down here.

DCO 540 that's exactly what the Colt looks like. I'll go over to the gunshop this morning and take a look at it. $1K is alot to shell out. I could sell my Browning Hi Power safe queen, use that money and the $1K toward a Wilson...
Good point. If the box was collectible, I'd probably put it on Gunbroker or something. What I was really trying to say, is that I don't worry about antiques or collectible stuff. The fact that the gun came with a box would not add any value for me.
That is really nice lookingI'd rather own my 1977 Combat Commander than a $2K Wilson.
But that's just me.
