What do you think is the best handgun (pistol or revolver) under $1,000? Please pick just 1 gun with 1 specific caliber.

I am thinking of an all around handgun for carry, home defense, shtf...not so much hunting or plinking however if you feel a hunting or plinking gun is the best then by all means list it

Thanks

any number of guns fits this bill,

beretta, HK, sig, glock, springfield,

you can even get entry level 1911's if thats your thing..

My choice would be a glock 22 for a full size, and a 27 for a very easy carry gun,

If you wanted to add hunting to the bill, a glock 20 or 29, although the 10mm is harder to aquire during normal times, let alone during "shtf" ,

Take a look at Sig's new P226 E2, has a improved grip, more ergo. Or look at a HK or CZ. When it comes to caliber...it is hard to pick one, but 9mm because its cheap to practice with and a qaulity hollow point is just as good as a 45 hollow point unless you are going to use ball ammo for self defense.

DJ got it right. Glock 19 (9mm) for your needs. Period.

Light for carry. Not too big and not too small. Absolutely minimal maintenance. Rugged and durable. 100% reliable, even when not cared for. Very common caliber. Do-it-yourself parts replacement if ever needed. Parts availability very good. Highly respected for all these characteristics.

Only downside = Not pretty.

Oh well. :)

Consiering your post adedendum in italics, I'd recommend looking at Kahr's offerings - their compact all-metal series is under that price - enough so that you could get a great trigger in it, some mags and your favorite holster. I have an MK9 that is a great gun, and well slimmer than a G26 (although heavier). The trigger will likely improve greatly with some work, though. Their customer service was top-notch for me - I sent them a 6-year old gun (5 yr warranty at the time) that I noticed had a crack in the slide between the barrel and guide rod openings, told them up front the purchase date, they just said "send it to us - we'll make it right." They replaced the entire slide and internals. Granted, 'cracked slide' is not the best advertisement, but I found it on a thread; Kahr actively noticed it was an issue with some of their earliest slides, fixed them free of charge. They even polished up a non-related blemish that my gun came with new in box. it looked like someone had dropped the frame on straight down - a little gouge in the metal. Looks factory new, now. This repair was done over a year ago - the gun I bought was one of the very early models they produced. I have read less favorable (although overall favorable) reports about their polymer-framed guns.

I haven't read about their services, but I have looked into C&S Gunsmithing's Kahr trigger jobs - seems like a good try.

That said, I more often carry a custom G26 with a Clipdraw. I still think it's worth at least going into a gunshop that has one and handling a Kahr, if for no other reason than ruling it out compared to the Glock subcompacts. I prefer the Glock because I can change the parts I like easily. I put a SS guide rod on it, NY1 trigger and 3.5 lb connector, straight-8 night sights...etc. Also, my larger-framed Glock holsters work with it.

In my area , a new Kimber Custom II and Pro carry II can be had for under a grand easy.
Yeah! I guess I didn't even think about that. When I went in for my Kimber, I went in for the exact one I wanted and ignored price. I bought the Kimber Custom CDP II

Ended up taking it out the door for about $1380.00

Best handgun I have ever owned, hands down. Soft recoil, slim, and accurate as all get out. For my CCW class I took it to test with. Everybody else was using .22 rimfire pistols, LOL. It was hilarious when we were all shooting - crack, crack, crack....... BOOM!!! LOL

Funny , my dad used my SP101 loaded with full house 357mag for his and scared the 380acp crowd . Made him shoot after everyone else had left the range.
