I have a Mossberg 590 shotgun that I want to replace the small factory bead front sight with a XS Big Dot sight. The color choice is a yellow or orange circle and the sight can also be Tritium surrounding the color dot or it can be non Tritium.

I mainly shoot slugs with my shotgun at my indoor range which is fairly well lit. I don't have access to an outdoor range. I am also using the shotgun for home defense with a weapon mounted light on the forend.

I called XS this morning and they told me the yellow is brighter at night and the orange is brighter in the daylight.

I am trying to decide which color to order - orange, yellow and if I should include Tritium. I realize this is a personal choice but I am hoping someone on the Board will have exprerience with the XS Big Dot shotgun sights and can steer me in the right direction.

Merry Christmas to everyone!!

Thanks - Bill

My thoughts:
1. Might as well get the tritium, it can’t hurt anything and can only help. I have tritium rifle sights on my SD 870s and had them on my work shotguns before retirement. They’re perhaps not absolutely necessary, but I sure like them.

2. Only you can answer the color question, everyone’s eyes are their own. I personally pick up yellow/green better than red/orange. Other folks are the opposite. We’re all correct.

I have XS big dot tritium express rifle sights on my 870P. The big dot insert around the front sight tritium lamp is white. I've never had a problem seeing the front sight in any lighting condition.

As for yellow or orange... I installed Trijicon HD XR tritium night sights on my G19. Like you, I didn't know which color, yellow or orange, on the front sight would work best for me, so I ordered front sights in both colors, installed them, and found out that yellow worked best for me.

Your intuition was spot on. The Streamlight TL-Racker and the Surefire Forend are good ways to have a WML on a shotgun, but with both units your support hand rests up against the hard plastic of the forward part of the forend housing the light, and under recoil, this hard plastic slams against your hand, especially if you employ a push/pull method of recoil control...it kicks less but your hand hurts :ROFLMAO:

Your solution eliminates the problem entirely allowing you to have a slimmer, unobtrusive forend and still have a light. I currently have a Magpul forend on mine with the intention of mounting a light on it, but the light gets in the way of a full grip. I have had the Hogue forend on several 870s and it is a good choice also.
