My buddy and I were debating whether there was any difference between getting tased with the probes vs. the alligator clips. He got the probes, I got the clips. I thought alligator clips would be worse because of the arching (I have a permanent burn mark on my butt), and he thinks you lose current with arching so probes are much more painful since it's direct current. Neither of us had been through both, so neither of us really knows for sure.

Have any of you had both probes and alligator clips before? Which did you think was worse, if any difference at all?

Ultimately, we both agreed the taser did its job, and joked about the paper work if tasers in the field were equipped with alligator clips and you had a subject cooperative enough to put on the clips but resisting enough to tase them...

Clips are worse. The clips require more energy and therefore leave signature marks far beyond what a properly imbedded probe would. Clips can also be placed for maximum incapacitation (e.g. shoulder and opposite ankle). I actually saw a guy (another officer) today who had part of a tattoo removed by the alligator clips. It wasn't significant, but it was noticeable.

If I remember right, the Taser has two phases to each pulse. One 'breaks through' the skin to allow the other phase to penetrate to cause disruption to the nerves.

The clips will hurt more because the first phase is the one that causes most of the pain. If the probes are in the body the pain is less because the pulse dosen't have to break through the skin.

I'll find my instructor manuel and look the DS answer up.

Dude, it didn't occur to you to you to hang up your badge and start a removal business?

In a serious, related note, there is a medical protocol that uses tasers (actually the old tazer-like hand zappers) to treat venomous spider bites. Apparently, passing an electric current through the venom chemically changes the toxic proteins into relatively harmless substances.

Tazers: They ain't just for zappin' jackasses anymore!

Yeah, my Sgt. was nice to me. One on my left shoulder, the other in my right pocket. :tongueout: He had an evil childish grin on his face when he pulled the trigger.

And as you may have seen in another thread, I got no "Taser! Taser! Taser!" warning. Just an out-of-the-blue shock...

That's exactly what I got... okay a couple inches difference, clipped on my right shoulder and left calf. It sucked beyond all suck.

I'm convinced that anyone who says "oh gee, the Taser ain't all that bad" probably got shot at close-ish range with probes that only landed a few inches apart (rather than 5 feet apart and across your entire body).

Even with the clips, between getting tased, pepper sprayed, and chopping onions, I'd ride the lightning 100 again before having to do the other 2.

Our instructor made everybody count to 3. For some reason I got popped on 2. The element of surprise sucks.

I have to admit that I always called "taser, taser, taser" when shocking a student, but usually deployed halfway through the third "taser" or a second or two after...

Don't forget you would also ride the lightning over having to watch even a minute of Jersey Shore, Housewives of Atlanta, Big Brother After Dark, or any movie starring Gwenneth Paltrow.

True stuff, there.

I just got tased last week as part of my training with the SO as a newbie D/D. There were 22 of us getting trained that day so they only shot 2 with the probes and the rest of us had the clips. The two guys that got the probes seem to have injuries (albeit still minor) worse than myself and some of the others who got the clips. I just have two little burn marks, top of left shoulder and back/left of my waistline, that felt like a bad bug bite/sting for a day or so. They had some bruising around the entry points and slight burn marks that took a little longer to go away.

However, we did have one guy who somehow dislocated BOTH of his shoulders while taking the ride laying on his stomach. :dunno: No one at my SO has ever even heard of that happening before. I didn't mind the 5 seconds too much, felt kind of exhilarating, and was about to volunteer for a second go when I saw him and decided to quit while I was ahead.

Ooh! Pick me! Pick me! Only it was just my left shoulder (not both thankfully), immediately after the training when I raised my arm over my head to put my UA shirt back on. Shoulder slipped right out of socket (due to weakened muscles from the tasing?) then slipped right back in. But dang, that hurt and was really annoyingly sore with limited motion for months afterwards. I did a lot of self-rehab of the shoulder muscles to recover.

If I weren't brand new and on probation, I would have filed an injury claim. That way it was, I just didn't want to be seen as "that guy" so I sucked it up and healed it myself.

This guy couldn't even get up off the ground. And our instructors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him but eventually let him go to CentraCare when he went pale and started sweating profusely. Then we got a call that they sent him to the ER when they realized both shoulders were out. He's been out on worker's comp for the last week and I think he said he has to have surgery on one of them.
