When I first got interested in firearms, a friend told me that he always wipes his guns down when he puts them into his safe... Told me that otherwise, sweaty fingerprints can -- eventually -- cause premature finish wear.

Now, I know he was referring to a *long* period of time (like years, probably), but I got into the habit and am now almost obsessive about wiping down my firearms. If I touch them, I wipe them down before leaving them, even overnight.

I realize that this is excessive :), but am curious as to how often others wipe down their GLOCKs in particular. I'm especially interested in hearing from those of you who never, ever wipe them down, especially if your GLOCKs still look awesome and show no signs of finish wear. :)

Basically, I'd like to break myself of the habit. So, what do y'all do, and what's been the result?

Sweaty fingerprints will absolutely rust a blued gun. And no, it doesn't take "years". When I had an FFL and saw a high volume of firearms, I saw many examples of poor maintenance on a weekly basis. It's more common than not, and impacts value probably more than any other single factor. I've seen numerous blued guns with perfect fingerprints rusted into them. So it's smart to wipe down your guns, especially blued guns, before putting them away for more than a day or three. JMO.

That said, Glocks, with their tennifer metal treatment, resist corrosion better than any firearm I've ever seen, other than possibly some with plating like electroless nickel/hard chrome. Certainly as good or better than any stainless gun. Again, JMOs.

I just wipe mine down after handling it, like you said to get the fingerprints off. Especially tonight with a brand new G21SF I just put a little Hoppes oil into a nice gun cloth and this bad boy is just glistening and soaking in that oil into the steel's pours.

I also wipe down all of my guns before they go into the safe. My EDC is the only one that gets wipe down only when I shoot/clean it. Beacuse I do not want that coating of CLP all slicked up when I need to grip it.

I wipe all my guns down with a silicone gun cloth after cleaning before putting them away. Good habit to get into. Started doing it with my shotguns after hunting.
This is what I do. Works well.

When I clean, my wife always says I'm "fondling my guns".

Whatever.

It is really not neccesary with a Glock. Shoot it, clean it, and put it away.

Its a Glock; dont baby it.

A guy I work with asked me to clean a few of his guns, Yeah he is to lazy, so on all his pistols I cleaned the heck out of them and coated the whole gun with CLP and a slight wipe down, thats what I do to my Sig is that the right way to store a gun?

When I was a kid I had very sweaty and oily hands, the type that promote rust on blued firearms. I got in the habit of wiping down a firearm after handling it, whether I've just fondled it for a minute, or been carrying it all day. If it's going in the safe or cabinet it gets wiped down with a lightly oiled cloth I keep in a gallon ziplock bag. My CCW weapon stays wiped down with a silicone rag so I don't stain my clothes or smell like gun oil.
