Wilson Combat build - .308

Wilson Combat - I have built a lot of AR15s and few AR10/308 rifles (DPMS pattern) and have used Wilson combat parts (Barrel, BCG, AGB) partly because of the Wilson quality I have experienced and partly because I have found it easier to headspace a same manufacturer bolt/barrel combination. The Aero receivers have always worked really well (M5) - no problems (although I have used Fultons as well for .308, and a variety for AR15s).

So a friend decides he wants to build a AR308, and asks my opinion, he shoots my 3 in .308 on a trip from CO and decides to follow my builds (Aero/Wilson). He has a few problems that I chalk up to "his first build" and I (and a few of his local friends) are trying to talk him through them. We finally do a call on Zoom and it looks like his gas tube is short, his bolt is chewed up, and he has brass all over in the upper. He measures his gas tube, I measure mine - same length gas tube, but it extends a little over 1/4" less in his receiver. He takes it to a local gun smith who verifies it does not extend into the receiver far enough, and the bolt is too buggered up to keep. And the Barrel/gas tube location/ dimensions are the cause - (barrel is keyed for gas block - presumable for exact fit)...He calls Wilson, and Wilson tells him their parts are not engineered to fit with any other manufacturer and says since his gun is a "Frankenstein AR" they will not warrant the parts! Gunsmith then sells him on a complete custom build for $1,500 more!

I have always been a fan of Wilson - used their 1911 parts, AR parts, etc. I even have 3 of their AR15s that work flawlessly and 3 .308 builds using their parts in DPMS pattern receivers. Is this a recent change in Wilson, or have I just been able to avoid this issue by some miracle? I know Wilson uses Armalite pattern receivers but never had a problem like he is experiencing. Anyone have a thought, same experience with Wilson?

I only use Armalite , Knights, Larue, Noveske , and LMT pattern parts for 308 builds, too much unknown in the other rounded lower versions for my taste, even though they are more plentiful I have seen too many tolerance issues with them particularly in the barrel extension areas, bolt fitment .

I know that can be true with some manufacturers and I respect your answer, I just have not run into it before. I am not experiencing any of the issues my buddy is having, and using similar/mostly same components - but ,my build is older. I have not built a .308 for a few years.
All the manufacturers you list are quality manufacturers, Armalite pattern if I remember right. But there are several building on the DPMS design receivers as well that are quality (Christenson and Geissele, etc.) and other than teh receivers not being interchangeable I have not read anything or experienced this level of error or incompatibility.

So the question is when you do a build do you stay with only parts from the same company as the receivers?

I always had my Wilson guns treated well but they were just that Wilson complete builds to my specifications. I had failure to eject issues on a super grade and they took care of it.

We are talking about parts here. You seem like you know what you are doing, unfortunately your friend does not. Is it the fault of the manufacturer of the parts in a Frankenstein build?

That is the real question - manufacturers sell their parts for builds, but in this case they seem to be selling parts for either a "kit gun" (rather than a build) or simply replacement parts for their proprietary systems. I have been doing it for so long, I know it is more than mere assembly and expect some fitment, but never an excuse like this for milling the barrel incorrectly - Wilson even verified the length the gas tube should be - and it is the correct length.

I am going to take down my .308 ARs and see if the location of the gas block is the same as his - but at first glance it looks like the barrel was milled incorrectly - but they will not acknowledge that.

I dont have pictures (he is in CO and I am in TX). Barrel is the Wilson super sniper.
Not sure the bolt "clocking" is at fault since it will fire and eject for about 40m rounds until it quits and the chamber is pretty covered in brass - but I will check with him. Thanks

I have a Wilson Combat (WC) 18" .308 Tactical Hunter fluted barrel I installed on my Aero Precision M5 AR308. The gas system on my barrel is WC's "intermediate length" which is longer than mid-length, and I had to purchase WC's proprietary gas tube. No issues with the rifle's functioning. However the WC 'Intermediate length" gas tube is 13.25" whereas a standard "mid-length" gas tube is 11.75", and the difference in length (1.5"), which doesn't account for the your friend's gas tube being 0.25" shorter inside the upper receiver.

Hmmm...

Agree - I have a Fulton upper and lower I built years ago with Wilson components that functions well - that is why I think it is a manufacturing issue rather than fit.
